I wrote to Premier Gordon Campbell last year about this subject. It seems to me that the only thing they care about is the mighty dollar. I told him that if the Pacific wild salmon disappear, so will the tourists and fishing lodges and the millions of dollars it produces for the Province every year. I also told him that BC has some of the finest salmon fishing on the planet and is the envy of the world. If it is lost, it will be gone forever and can never be replaced. It will be a disaster for us all. The Government has a duty to protect this unique resource for future generations.

This is his reply.

Thank you for your email regarding British Columbia's salmon aquaculture industry.

British Columbia has one of the most comprehensive environmental management
regimes for salmon aquaculture, and our farmed fish are among the best in
the world. We will continue to work closely with the federal government on
salmon aquaculture matters in order to ensure a coordinated approach to
achieving environmental sustainability and economic development for the
industry. Ensuring the sustainability of our wild salmon and our marine
environment is of paramount importance.

With regard to your comments concerning sea lice, I assure you that our
government takes this issue very seriously and has already taken action by
establishing a plan with requirements that are among the most stringent in
the world. In February 2003, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and
Fisheries established a sea lice monitoring program for salmon farms in the
Broughton Archipelago. In 2004, the ministry extended the program
requirements to include the entire British Columbia salmon farming industry.
This includes a legal requirement to have approved plans for managing fish
health, including mandatory monitoring for sea lice on farms.

We believe that the Pacific Salmon Forum chaired by the Honourable John
Fraser will enhance our wild salmon and increase public confidence in
fishery and aquaculture management. As an independent body, the Pacific
Salmon Forum will work to ensure a strong future for all fisheries on the
coast and provide options and recommendations to protect and improve the
viability of British Columbia's wild salmon stocks. The forum will also
provide balanced and impartial information, advice, and recommendations to
improve our understanding of the economic, social, and environmental
sustainability of wild salmon and aquaculture on the coast.

British Columbians understand that the future of the salmon fishery and
aquaculture in our province is critical to the success of our economy and
coastal communities. This is why we are creating a place for independent
and open discussion on science, policy, and regulatory issues.

Our wild salmon are a precious resource that deserve special consideration.
Continued close monitoring of industry performance, effective enforcement,
and ongoing scientific research will allow our government to take an
adaptive management approach to regulation in order to ensure the long-term
preservation of our wild fish resources.

I appreciate the time you have taken to write.

All I can read is bluh bluh blua... Using big and long words to lull the public and make them think that all is under control. Believe me, it has to come to the catastrophy first before things are taken seriously. Always like that. Look at the lost salmon stocks on the old continent. Did we learn from that? Nope. Just like our justice system - you can only arrest somebody after he committed the crime. Never proactive...

Well..with the bills going through in the house of commons, our justice system will be much less criminal friendly...thank god for the Conservatives when it comes to that aspect of government anyway!!
