ECVI Nanoose, French Creek Report

Thanks for the report. The word in town is that someone snagged a military cable with something and in response they have been more focused on keeping people out. Can anyone confirm?

Anyone else been out? I just got home and will be taking friends out tomorrow for the low. Might go on a bit of a trip and try some new spots Friday.

I've talked to the range master twice in the last couple of weeks. The last time I asked him specifically if a recent incident had set them off. He said that was not the case. It had just taken them a while to get the authority to close that area. He brought down a marked portion of the Nanoose chart and it has been posted at the SC marina.

I have not fished for about a week, but it was pretty decent at both Gerald and Winchelsea at that time.

Out this AM for a morning bite. Fished the Winchwelsea's. Managed one decent keeper, 8lbs. Tons of Coho out there! A friend told me they are slightly endangered in the Georgia Straight so I didn't keep any but we probably had 20 bites and half from Coho. Saw a guy on the dock with 3 coho and a decent 15-20lb spring also. I asked him where he was fishing and he just sort of pointed towards the ocean, haha. Not very forth coming. Ah well. I was using cookies n'cream and kitchen sink.

I also got a little visit from the Navy out there. I guess I just skimmed the Whiskey Gulf area and he came over to profess his wisdom (although it was clear I was headed away from Whiskey Gulf). He did say they are being very active all week with Torpedo's in that area so I do appreciate him telling me as I'd rather not get hit with a torpedo.

I was escorted out of Whiskey Gulf last year when I strayed about 300 yards in when it was active. The gentleman escorting us was rather nasty - oh well. In times past the only time W G was a no go was when it was active as reported on VHF 16. Has this changed? The problem with being chased out was while we were in the zone we were catching really well after being chased away we stopped catching. This being said national security is of the highest priority and full marks to our navy guys for keeping us safe.
h.e.h.

He is probably referring to a new area closed effective 05/27. It covers the area from the shoreline of Winchelsea and is a fan shaped area the acoutistical cables run through to what we commonly refer to as WG.

Went on a bit of a run across the straight today and found fish. Only ran one rod due to a rigger malfunction and hit 8 fish in an hour and a half. Bonked 4 springs to 20 and a nice hatch coho.

Got out for a Thursday night bite and had nothing substantial until about 7:30-8 when we hit this hog. Took a couple good runs but came in relatively easily. 29 pounds. My friend is 6 ft 6 so he makes the fish look a little smaller than me. We had pretty good action all night on kitchen sink, cop car and Irish cream. The big fish came on Irish cream 150 ft down just off the north tip of winchelsea island. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Was a gorgeous evening to boot ;-) I love it here!

Nice work! And only one rod! That's awesome. Care to share what you were hitting them on?

Nicely done Kelly. Especially with one rod!

Congrats big time to you and your friend on that beauty SmokinJoe!!!:)

All on a green/white coyote 3 inch coyote at 170ft right on bottom. It's the lighter blade style with the scales and it has two tones to the green. All the fish were crammed with 4inch herring. Nice fish joe! I'm still looking for a slab this year.

Thanks for the info!

Took Kelly's report to the bank and decided to go across the strait this morning as well. Lines in the water by 550am, had a 22lber in the boat by 605am. Released a number of small shakers and a wild coho after that. Just before pulling the lines at 930, another hit and boated a 12lber. Beauty morning before the wind picked up for sure. About 6-8 scattered boats in the area but didnt see much else happening?

Both keepers caught on spoons between 80-95ft. If i can sort out the computer, will upload some pics.

Found my slab! Had a great afternoon, boxed 6 released 4 or 5 and lost a few. Over on the other side but a bit shallower today at 130-150ft.

First tyee of the year just squeaking over 30

Jon netting a high 20s spring

Max with a solid spring

Releasing a smaller spring

4 springs between 20 and 30 lbs with Jon cleaning the smaller 2 in the background.

Hey great fish guys. You mentioned the other side. Do you mean Lasquiti area? If not can anyone say how lasquiti / Sangster and even Epsom has been fishing. We are doing a trip over there mid July and I know a lot will change but would love to get an idea of what's going on..
Cheers

Hey Wishin, I am not totally savvy in the area, but from what we worked through today, Sangster and Lasqueti seemed pretty solid!

Check this one out!
36 lbs. 180', green and white spoon, green flasher, awesome wife!
Lasqueti near False Bay
