Renfrew 2010 Reports

Had a great time--no derby winner but our largest was 13.5. Great weather and a great way to end the season.

Pretty good coho fishing directly out front of the bell buoy yesterday. Steady action in the am, then died off after noon. Most of the hits were in 450ft depth, shallow (35-40), and on bait. More hatcheries than wild. 7-17 pounds.

Cool offshore wind out of the harbour in the am, then beautiful sunny day in pm. A bit of swell, but no chop.

The Marina is a ghost town now, only a week left in their season. The Reserve floats are pulled now, so fun to be able to speed through the river for a change instead of putting along at 2 knots... ;)

hey I'm heading to Renfew this weekend and I've never fished there before. I may/may not have access to a boat but I'll be bringing a few spincasting set-ups that I use in the rivers around Vancouver. I hear some people are catching coho off the beach these days? What about in the San Juan River? What is running? What are they biting on? Any advice/tips would be much appreciated.

Yup, you can catch and keep coho caught off the San Juan bridge or the beach towards the ocean. Tends to be a bit of snag-fest with buzz bombs and big trebles though.

Above the bridge, freshwater rules apply and I believe it is closed. I think you can fish for them, but no retention -- that's what DFO guy told me. But someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong....what they are using and what's working, can't help you there as I don't know. Good luck and have fun!

I'll bite. LOL

Love it or hate it, one will never rid the world of which he despises.

A culture of river fisherman won't be leaving any sooner than a commercial fisherman, a hunter, or a trapper just for example. As with anything there is a time and a place. If harvest quotas allow for it then there will certainly be people who will justify the need to do so.

Doesn't make anyone a loser, it's just not for you I guess.

I should also mention, I have given a lot of thought to the fishery that occurs near most estuaries during the fall. Snagging ( I despise blantant snagging for harvest or anything else) and it really bothers me to see the guy doing it. However, who are we to impose the idea that angling is in anyway better . It's a moral issue here. If one is hunting these fish for survival then any means necessary really. The idea that angling is pure is BS really. We are doing it for sport in most cases when in the context of the recreational sport fishery. Some may say we are loosers for playing with our fish.

Depends on our perspective.
