"Vancover Island" Browns Bay Chum Derby Oct 14th and 15th</u>

Chum fishing the most under rated salmon fishery on the Saltchuck !!!

Silver Bright and man can they fight !!!

Quadrupple Headers are common which can create alot of excitement for even the expeirenced fishermen !!!

Just like last year we will have a meet and greet on Friday Night @ the octagon clubhouse in the campground and some of us will provide you with the tips and tricks to have a very fishy weekend. Saturday Nights plans are being worked on now and are TBA. Most people will once again be camping right in Browns Bay @ Ripple Rock Rv Park or on there boats. Quite a few people have indicated to me they will be heading up a few days before the derby for some additional fishing time. Last year we had over 35 people in our fishing group alone. It was a blast for all those who attended and this year I am sure the group of guys will be over 50. Great weekend of fishing and fun!!!!

Here's some pics and a direct link to Browns Bay.;)

If you have any questions please post them and either myself or someone else will provide you with the answers to your questions. I will post more information and updates as we go along!

I look forward to seeing ALL of you there.:D

Cheers MyEscape

Are the fish up high enought to catch on fly rod set ups.
Cast flys or bucktails

Ya they are high enough to fly fish or buck tail but most people troll for them with sockeye style tactics although some use flies off the downriggers to take them down deeper.

Cheers ME

Will be there, one of the most exciting fishing there is, double , triple , quadruple headers cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

How much per rod or per boat ? What are the prizes ? Do you also know what moorage costs(per foot) and what camping costs (truck&camper}?

$10 per person derby fee, Max weigh in per person 4 fish per day (Daily Limit) As many rods as you can handle we run two each. ;) Camping $25 per night including hook-ups (5 minute walk to boat in marina) Dollar per foot approx per night moorage which includes launch fee and you can stay on your boat. Book early if you want moorage! All money raised goes to the salmon enhancement society. Top prize for biggest fish is approx $500.00 cash. Lots of great prizes to win all donated. All the money goes to a great cause and besides it's a great "Just the boy's weekend of fishing and fun." Last year 36+ in our group. Approx 260 entered in derby.

CS Toe to Toe lets go! Biggest Fish or Largest Daily Aggragate Weight of 4 fish???? During the derby 2006

That was a nice big bruiser you landed last year amongst the many others caught by you and Brian to take 2nd largest fish.

MyEscapes History:

2005 Largest fish and highest aggragate weight on day one
2005 2nd highest aggragate total weight for(4 fish)during the derby
2004 2nd highest aggragate total weight for(4 fish)during the derby

Any side bets!

I will fish extra hard to win this year tired of 2nd. This year I want to land the largest fish! ;)

No help this year CS. ;)

Quick Tally</u>

Camping Friday Night and Saturday Night $ 50.00
Moorage on 20' Boat Both Nights $ 40.00
Boat Gas $100.00
Eating out, food and snacks $ 90.00
Derby Fee X 2 $ 20.00

Total $300.00

Divided By 2 People $150.00
Plus Bevies $$$$$$$

Still A Cheap Weekend For The Amount of Fun You Will Have!

Cheers ME

I can already see that this year is going to be a big event. For those thinking of attending that did not attend last year there are a few of us that will assist everyone with the information on how and where to catch the fish. I'm sure we can russle up some goodie bags like last year. ;) Thanks Streamhopper for offering the scallops for the meet and greet on Friday Night one of the many highlights of last years Chumfest.

Sorry no pictures of the fantastic catered dinner we had on the Saturday Night in the Octagon Club House at ripple rock rv park thanks to Rip Tide Pub in Campbell River

Hope to see you there!!!!

Can someone tell me what the closest hotel/motel/cabins is to Browns Bay so I can look into booking somewhere for my wife and I.
Is it an easy fishery for someone not familiar with the area?
Thanx
Jason

the cheapest and closest motel is just out side Campbell river beside a tempo gas station just after the painters lodge road sorry forgot what it is called .its about 10-15 drive to browns bay.

p.s she does not like it when you clean your limit of chum in the bath tub. And if you give her a couple fish there is a freezer in the back.

what do y'all do with your chum ?
my experience with chum was that it was not much good
for anything...
smoked some..bbqd some... not too good:(
maybe there's something i missed ?

I will post accomadations tommorow that are very close by. Most people stay on there boats or camp at ripple rock rv park only 5 min walk to the dock and where all the pre and during derby get togethers take place.

Fresh Chum from the ocean has firmer meat then one might expect smoking and candying these fish is great have even done a filet on the bbq with dry spices only no marinade. ;) As soon as they get close to the river they start to bar and become mushy.

Cheers ME

p.s. 4 rods 4 fish two guys deciding which rod has the biggest fish laughin till your gut hurts thats chum fishin! [8D]

Campbell River seafoods do awesome candied chum, they recently re-opened and are worth taking your fish to them to get candied.Although it takes a while to get it back(well worth the wait):D

I've been dreaming of chumfest since last year it is the best time of the whole fishing season, the fish arent good for much other than crab bait or dog food which is a really good idea!!!!Sure was wet last year probably the wettest ive ever been in my life so bring your rain gear. But what a blast count me in.I was wondering if salty had any room in his boat so I dont have to take mine.HAHAHAHA

When you say "use sockeye gear", do you also rip off half the hootchie arms?

I'd love to be able to go.... no access to a decent boat though.... Will probably try fishing for chum next month on the Sunshine Coast though. Usually see them jumping in October and November.

I won't be able to make it this year.... I will be going to pick up the new toy at that time. I will definitely be trying to attend next year. Is it the same dates every year and or does anybody know what next years dates will be ?
