1981 Double Eagle gets a second chance

I'm curious as to why you plan on using epoxy rather than poly? Much more expensive isn't it? In the past I always scored the plywood with a skil saw or table saw before saturating with resin and bonding to the existing structure for a better bond.Thickened poly with chopped strand bonds well.
I sent an email to double eagle and asked them about resin and they responded with “you can try polyester but it might not bond as well as vinyl ester resin. They said epoxy will work well. So any areas that I am bonding to original fibreglass I will use epoxy and areas that will be new glass I will use poly

That must be really daunting ripping a boat apart only to see everything you have to put back together. Not for the faint at heart, that's for sure. It will be a great boat when all said and done. What's the standup height of that hardtop on that model?

Good luck!
Because the floor has a 7” step down it gives you about 6’6” of head room. I am going to get rid of the step down and put taller windows in.

Actually I thinknit would be less then 6’6”. Probably closer to 6’1”.

Where are you getting the “taller windows” from. Interested as I’m contemplating something like this as well.

I talked to one of the guys a budget auto glass asking if he knew anyone in Nanaimo that can do it and he said just about any glass shop can order the glass and the framing material to make them. There are two routes you can go. Full aluminum frame or build the top from wood and cut out the holes for them to put in windows. I am going to go with 18” windows and will also be increasing my roof about 12 inches. This is still a ways down the road for me. Ibhave lots of work to do on the inside before I am at that stage.

That’s often overlooked, epoxy will bond to any resin, but poly or vinyl have problem bonding to each other or epoxy. Always safest to go with epoxy.

It has been awhile with weather and work not being on my side but I finally have the two layers of marine plywood epoxied into place. This is a big step forward and once I lay the fibreglass it will be just over 3” thick. I should be able to hang an elephant off the back.

Filled all the holes on the transom. Turned out really well. Also glassed in the in/out hole with 8 layers of biaxial fibreglass cloth. Next will be to grind down each filled hole and put a piece of fibreglass over it. Here is. Picture of the thickness of the transom now. Just over 3 inches.

Put some primer on today so I can sand it down and find the low spots. Feels good to have all the holes filled other than the trim tab through holes. Most of this primer will get sanded off.

What kind of pod design are you going with? Is she 20ft? Are you having any issues with blush from the epoxy? Looks good so far nice work.

Now some more work on the inside. Sanding, grinding, and cutting. Looking forward to get the build stage going on the stringers and floor
