Scotty Orca rod holders?

Just had an "in the boat on dry land" try of an Orca rod holder-my wife loves them-I think they're pretty slick-BUT I have no complaints about my existing ones particularly-before I switch out 3 has anyone used them hard on the WCVI-if so are there any glitches or things that are annoying about them?? Do they require any ongoing maintenance particularly on a 3 or 4 day away trip?

Never done any maintenance on mine, ever. They are great. Sometimes newbies have trouble with the proper motion to pull the rod out of the holder.

Think you'll find a few available on here, if not I'll give you some leads. I have used used them. Not my favorite but they do the job.

No experience with them, I use Folbe's. Haven't heard negative stuff about the Orca's.

I like them a lot. Big step up in efficiency and ease of use IMO

Especially funny to see someone get confused and not know what to do if they are used to the standard ones however!

Ok maybe I'm asking the wrong question -are there some better quick release holders along the same lines as Orca's that you prefer and why? I've only had one try with an Orca for 2 min on dry land and that was it. Tried another brand 5 years ago on a sturgeon charter and had a lot of trouble popping it so never pursued it. Thanks

Used them on a sturgeon charter last year. Loved them. Bit tricky if there is a load on the rod but easy to compensate for it.

They are hard on cork handles. I use them for sturgeon only with foam handle rods

Was letting line off the rigger on my buddies boat and the orca opened up and down went my combo. Thankful for the clip staying attached as I got it all back. Heard similar stories of this happening with Hali's.

That's all i needed to hear! I used for first time sturgeon fishing last summer on a charter and thought damn these are slick maybe this would be nice for wcvi fishin... losing just one combo is enough i will stick with what i got.

Lost a halibut combo over the side with the orca lucky it came up on the other side of the boat on another rob was a depressing 5 minutes now i use a lanyard with them

I agree with the hard on cork handles but it usually only effects one side of the boat as to how your rod sits in the holder on that side. I found that by grinding the area smooth in the spot where the holder bites into the cork eliminates that problem. I am using one on each side when I use two rods off a downrigger(top rod) and so far they are ok. However if I were to ever loose a rod due to failure my opinion would change.

I love my Scotty Orca's and while it is true that they do tend to wear out cork rod handles I have alleviated this to a great extent by wrapping camo hockey tape around the small area on the rod where the wear is most apparent. The beauty of these holders is the fact that even a raw amateur can slip the rod out of the holder in one fluid motion and that greatly increases the speed to which the hook can be set and after seven seasons of heavy guiding use they seem to have held up rather well. The one thing to keep in mind is that in a small boat application I found that sometimes it is necessary to reverse the direction the holder sits on the rail on one side or the other in order that the pressure on the rod does not inadvertently cause the rod to pop out of the holder by itself.

Definetlly not strong enough for halibut. The strikers have a stainless pin inside plastic, won't break or bend.I tried the Orca's on the downrigger because I didn't like the way the standard holders bend away from the tubing on the downrigger(port side only).I used it for a year and went back to stock because my partners had trouble pulling the rod out in a hurry. It takes a while to get used to them ,they always look like they're going to open up when under tension.I'll sell or lend mine if anyone wants one to try out.

Trevor at Trotac made me up a couple, tie them to a cleat i have to striker rod holders as well but when there's 4 people fishing i use the orca s too i should buy more strikers i think but the orca s are sweet for salmon, still don't really trust them though
