Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0352-RECREATIONAL - Fraser River Chinook - Areas 19 and 20 - Recreational Management Actions Continued

The Department is continuing to implement the measures as outlined in Fishery
Notice FN0092. The Department has been in consultations with representatives
of the Sport Fishing Advisory Board to develop new management measures to
further protect Fraser River Chinook populations as they move past the Victoria
area. Details of those measures are still being finalized.

Effective 00:01 hours Saturday May 22, 2010 and until further notice the daily
limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day which may be wild or hatchery marked
between the size limit of 45 cm and 67 cm or hatchery marked only chinook over
67 cm in length. These restrictions on chinook salmon will be in effect in
Subareas 19-1 to 19-4 and Subarea 20-5 (those waters near Victoria between
Cadboro Pt to Sheringham Pt.).

An update will be provided on the duration of these management measures in a
subsequent fishery notice by the end of May.

Notes:

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the voluntary Salmon Sport Head
Recovery program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped
chinook and coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical
information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head
Recovery Program at (866) 483-9994 for further information.

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia. This includes all species of fish in the Fraser
River.

Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye. These fish are
hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase the
numbers of Cultus Lake sockeye.

The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.

Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to all
fin fishing. Descriptions of these closures, and other recreational fishing
information, can be found on the Internet at:

did a hally trip today in the slop well worth the bouncing around we brought 8 haly to the side ofthe boat and lost 4 others in about 4 hrs largest was 68lbs. herring and octopus were working good today.

Nice work CRaven! Anyone else catching? We almost joined you this morning on the flats but went for Butts off Constance instead. Got a few flatties so it was worth the run. [:p]

it was a good weekend of haly trips friday was one of the best days of southisland haly i ever had with 15 fish to the side of the boat in just over 3 hours nothing huge but a few 50-6olbrs they were eating anything we through down.Must have landed on the whole herd,Sat wasn't quite as good but managed 6 on a 5 hour trip this day was ***** all the way and the largest was 45ish and sun was good had to move around a couple times but landed on them good at the 27fath reef and we got our 5 in short order.

This is usualy the last set of tides i fish before going to sooke but with the lack of doggies around i'm hanging around for the set in the first week of june.Fingers crossed the doggies don't show or it's going to be a long week.lol.

Bananas
I am coming up to the Island to fish halis during the first and second weeks of June. What dates are the next good set of tides and current? Would you fish Constance or off Pedder?
Thanks

Sunday was good for us off the front for the hali's as well. 3 in the mid 30's for us.... a special wtf to the dude in the small double eagle that drove up within 10 ft of us, hit mark on his plotter and then drove off! At the very least, try to be discreet about it bro! :( But i guess that's easier than trying to learn on your own like the rest of us!

Salmon is slammin' too!

Took only a couple hours to get 5 hookups and 4 in the boat. All clipped between 15-20 lbs. Squirts in the mud at 130'.

Gotta thank our friendly tax payers to the south for these lovely hatch jobs.

Slower this afternoon, with only 3 hookups 10lb in the bucket,
released a small one, and a good one lost.
How did you guys do Chris73 ?

Fished the flats for the morning slack until 1 PM or so. Just after the tide change we hit 4 springs of which only two stuck - 1 around 20 lbs unclipped which went back unharmed after an awesome battle, and another ~13 lbs clipped that saw his last day. That last one was not a feeder spring and had roe in it but was clipped. Maybe one of those ET Frasers with a CWT in it that will cost us a season again when turned in. Around 11 it went dead for us. All on hardware hard on the bottom.

On the flats today, like many others. Threw the gammut at them, except for chovie. Played one for five seconds, other than that just kept cleaning the lines which is always fun when fishing the bottom.
