Last spring, 2023, researchers at University of Victoria (UVic) and the Sport Fishing Institute of British Columbia (SFI) collaborated to conduct a survey about the effects of management measures on tidal waters recreational fishing in BC. We have now completed an interactive online dashboard where you can view the results: https://recfish.uvic.ca/. The dashboard allows you to view summaries and graphs of the data, as well as filter and compare the results by different criteria (such as participant demographics, species targeted, region fished, and working within the recreational fishing sector).

There was a lot of interest in the survey among our angling community, leading to 1,918 responses. Most responses were fishers from BC (98% of the roughly 1,600 that provided this demographic information). The survey asked about fishing activities, motivations, the impacts of management measures, beliefs and attitudes about management, information sources about management measures, and citizen science and resource stewardship activities.

We are also communicating the survey in other ways. We presented findings internally to colleagues at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Pacific Region, Policy and Economic Analysis Branch and at the World Fisheries Congress in Seattle, WA (03-07 March 2024). Finally, we are working on several manuscripts that will be submitted to academic journals. The manuscripts include results from the survey as well as accompanying interviews that we conducted with professional sports fishing guides and lodge operators in BC about the social, cultural, and economic impacts of marine management measures.

We believe that the data and dashboard will provide fisheries managers and the recreational fishing community with valuable insights into possible human responses to fisheries management measures that can inform the decision making process.

Thank you and have a great upcoming season!

Awesome stuff. Thank you

The new dashboard allows any user to dig into the survey data to run their own reports to answer questions about what choices individual anglers are likely to make when faced with a changing regulatory framework. This should be a useful tool for fisheries managers and stakeholders alike to gain a sense of how people will shift their decisions around participating in various fisheries based on what is important to them. Some really cool ranking in the data by geographic area about which species are most important to fishers as a simple example to illustrate.
