Victoria Reports 2015

It was at Workpoint boat club beside Westbay marina.I've always left them mounted on the boat as 75% of the other boat owners do.The marina has surveillance cameras,we'll see if they picked up anything.I don't know how many other boats were hit if any. This is the first time I've had anything taken in 40 years of fishing ,so I guess my number came up.The only distinguishing marks I can think of is I put outboard pull start handles on my retrieval lines, they cut 1 off.Learning experience I guess.

That sucks. I saw a few electric down riggers at Esquimalt trading pawn shop a couple weeks ago. I went and got the Scotty locking knob plates from Trotac. Probably weren't yours that I saw but worth checking the pawn shops if you have your serial numbers.

Why are you shopping at a pawn shop? Sorry for the question but I am always curious at what feeds the fire . There is nothing good about a pawn shop period. Get rid of them IMHO. Sure they help people out of tough times but they more than help the criminal element BIG TIME.

Rayvon the jigger

Sorry to hear about the riggers Rayvon. I was near you and did a few donuts near you at Constance in the blue tin boat. The guide boat hit a school behind you, I followed behind, then there was about three or four of us circling that school. The needlefish imitations in green were working for me. Lots of bait and a few small schools out there with all those porpoises. I was admiring the action on your jigging/mooching rod. What brand and model is that?

I think I was using one of my old Shimano Convergence rods,it's a little on the light side for jigging.

I would do a little research on pawn shops vs payday loans, before getting on a pulpit. Most people do not have access to credit and a full bank account like most of us here. Hope Rayvon gets his riggers back and if anyone spots a roof top tent for sale cheap let me know as it was stolen along with my lantern, ladder and more.

Rayvon
I'm next door to you in Hidden Harbour, I got mine stolen a couple of years back. Thieves had to use a socket set to get them off the swivel mounts, I had used Allen Key style bolts on bases so they were still there. Not one of the many live-boards heard anything. It's a **** off for sure!

Rayvon

So sorry to hear about your riggers. Think they're active in the area right now. Had my 8hp merc taken off the boat out of the driveway just around the corner from WestBay a few weeks ago. Here's to finding, or catching, them!

Was your motor bolted down and chained?

Late post from last weekend...

Trolled around both sides of Constance with bait and 6.0 TKO glow spoon..

TKO took a 42lb halibut and a 10 lb spring all on or near the bottom... traded a couple cannon balls for that hali.

13 lb spring came on bait.

I will update with a video of the hali on the TKO soon.

springs and Hali on same day, priceless.

First time for me fighting a halibut on the trolling rod... really is a priceless experience.

Knowing that it is possible makes winter and early spring bottom bouncing that much more exciting in certain areas.

Also - the hook snapped when the fish hit the deck and the TKO spoon didn't bend at all and still ran true... as evidenced by the spring that was caught on it after the battle with the halibut. Very impressed with the build quality.

Way to go buddy, another ringing TKO endorsement,,,just goes to show, you don't need to spend a ton of money on expensive hali gear and spoons ;)

Went out with fellow member GDW this morning to Border Bank and picked up to 2 small hali 15 and a 25 on salmon belly and herring at 230 ft. Was rough out there till 1030 then settled down to a nice roll. Thanks for the ride Peter.

Was at border the last 2 days. We got a 59, 40, 20 and 18. All on octopus. The 59 was good for 9th place in the derby and a new trophy mooching combo! Sweet!

Fished Constance today solo with the changing tide, picked up a 9 lb hatch jigging at 75 ft. Hooked a monster at same depth played for over a half hour spooled twice, had to chase the dam thing could not slow it down. I'm sure it was large hali as it never surfaced and stayed at the bottom for most of the time. Using 20 lb braid and 30 lb mono backing I could not control where we went. I was fishing a 6oz jig and the hook finally broke leaving only 2 hooks from the treble hook I was using. Most exciting time I've ever had jigging as you never know what you hook into while jigging for salmon. Finished the day with 4 nice dunges.

Fished Church Rock and Beachy head today, bit slow for chinook had one on lost it. Saw quite a few other boats with fish on though so maybe we were doing something wrong (classic fishing not catching analogy insert here). Tried our luck for the recently opened ling cod closer to Beachy head, ended up with two close to 70cm and managed to jig a spring as well on a jig re-set, really nice surprise. Beautiful weather, hard to complain about anything even the fishing company, haha.

Fished the waterfront today. Esquimalt, breakwater, flagpole.... Bait and various spoons, various depths.... Scraped bottom... Tried all my regular tactics that generally work.
Saw one small school of bait at the harbour mouth, that's all she wrote. My expectations were low though. ;-)

All my gear's ready for the pending summer season now so there's the win.
