A bizarre Nootka story, then I'll shut up, try to flip a few stocks, and get back to fixing busted stuff.
I'm trolling along by myself one evening about 8pm, Three Cove Bay, two rods out on downriggers. Fish hits starboard rod, he's on long enough to get me excited, then gone. While I'm dealing with that rod and getting it fishing again 3 "young guys", late 20's I'd say, troll by going the other way, they yell at me, FISH ON, and I look up and port rod is jumping...same deal, momentary excitment, then off.
I get rods fishing again, make a turn to fish the same spot again, they are doing the same. We pass, say hi and that's that.
Buddy of mine is trolling towards me, I turn and troll along side him. We see the "young guys" boat dead in the water about 100 yards away and someone in the water close by. Buddy and I are on the radios to each other and the conversation went something like this:
"Looks like someone is in swimming off that boat, hot enough"
"Looks like...hey just checked with binocs, there's two of them in the water"
"What the hell, one of them is holding a landing net"
"Huhhhhhh? The other guy is holding a rod"
"WTF it looks like he has a fish on."
"They fall overboard trying to net it?"
"Two guys? No way."
We're getting closer now, easier to see.
"Hey, they have life jackets on."
Anyway, these two guys, one on the rod, one with the net, landed a 23lb spring while in the water...all of them.
Back at Couogar Creek I'm telling people the story at the dock, Dick hears me and says, "oh those guys, they've been dong that for years, they used to use inner tubes".
They get a big salmon on, he's going to run, and run long, so they have some time.... rod guy puts on life jacket and jumps off the boat and plays the fish. Net guy puts on life jacket and swim fins and jumps in with net. Then they play and net the fish in the water. Net guy has fins so he can stay close to rod guy when the salmon plays him and is dragging him around....very funny to watch. Monitoring VHF 68 the next week while by myself I heard of two more fish they'd done same with.
