Next round of closures SRKW related

No relief whatsoever for Gulf Islanders. DFO went full nuclear.

What pressure can we apply to have them implement the same measures for Gulf Islanders as everyone else? This can be fixed just as quickly as it was messed up if the Minister so desires.
It was the best of the worst! Option B was full nuclear. I agree with your comments and it's time for this Minister to be held accountable for his decisions!

What I find amazing is, there is a 0% chance they will stop even 25% of the yachts transiting up and down in the "no go" zone. They couldn't even stop slow moving vessels with their silly fishing ban last year.

I've already requested another meeting with my MP to demand this be reversed. ATIP requests to DFO for their data and information as to why they ignored feedback at the consultation sessions will be forthcoming. I intend to keep their staff very busy preparing documents for disclosure as I believe evidence is rather valuable thing.

Greg Taylor posted this publically on Raincoast Facebook after decision. It made my night btw as now we dont have to listen anymore over the summer. Again this a public view and I am only reposting.

From Greg Taylor, fishing advisor watershed watch and member of MCC Caucus:

I appreciate Raincoast’s faith. But I am surprised a science based organization is willing to accept an experiment without monitoring, evaluation, or transparency. DFO’s Regional Director General described the fishery management measures DFO has endorsed as an ‘experiment’ by the outfitter/guide industry. But when asked how the voluntary request for the guide/outfitters to reel up their lines when SRKW come within 1k would work, how it would be monitored, who would monitor it, and how the measure would be independently evaluated, she could not answer. This is not an experiment. This is accepting there is a tooth fairy because, well, that’s what you were told.

And that folks is what your groups have been dealing with.

This is small victory but it is far from over. We still had our fishery move to no retention in a lot of areas. We also need to work hard next year to work on other fisheries such as the gulf islands. I would like to see some easing of the cowichan restrictions fo give those anglers some opportunities.

I would like to thank the SFI, West coast guides association, and so many other members of the SFAB that I met on the way with this. Now let's go fishing. I think we have been beat up enough. What do you think?

To be honest I was suprised at decision. Was 99 percent sure we were getting kicked harder again.

Would be awesome if we could get pics or video of the whale harrasers!
have to admit - if its still happening, record it, report it (just remember there are different rules for transients vs SRKW for WW so adjust to the 200m on the assumption they know the difference). At same time, lets make sure we all respect the rules and do as they suggest - kill the engines, turn off sounder - I know many just stop fishing, but I'm sure some don't. If we respect the rules now, maybe that provides more leverage later when the heat is once again back on. Don't give them a reason to target us essentially!

SpringVelocity "To be honest I was surprised at the decision. Was 99 percent sure we were getting kicked harder again."

I think the constant pressure that has followed the release of the 2019 Chinook regs and particularly the demonstration in front of Wilkinson's office may have bought us Option A. We have to keep the pressure on!!!

Hard to know why the chose what option they did, I would like to hope the recent push back made a difference. as noted by others

"Well the good news is that they did not go with Scenario B at the Fraser Mouth, which would have shut down that fishery for us as we know it and would have been the nail in the coffin for Vancouver sport fishing opportunities."

Option B would have ended the vancouver fishery, with closures for chinook till August, then Option B would of closed the best place to fish in August it would have been devastating.

As noted by SV this is just round one that IMO is going to be a battle every year as long as SRKW are on the ENGO agenda.

Rec has voluntarily took cuts in the past the media never spinned it good for us. It's always the salmon are in a critical state of being wiped off this planet. This is going back to the 90's. Watch for it this year always around the start of fraser sockeye season the media puts out a doom days scenario.

he's right, even in Alberta we have learned, if you give up something to get social license, they claim victory and just move on to your next easiest group/area. the old saying give an inch and they go for a mile.

I was told by one of the most senior David Sususki advisers they always demand more because they know they get less, when I was arguing with the statement that all chinook salmon should be closed to fishing in BC!

Take a look at page 9 of https://waves-vagues.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/Library/339995.pdf (it's the peer reviewed study DFO is using to justify the Pender/Saturna closures.) 937 feeding events. I'm not seeing a single dot off of either Pender or Saturna. If the Pender/Saturna areas are such key feeding habitat why were there no sightings? It appears there was a singular sighting off of Stuart Island in WA but 0 in the "interim sanctuaries."

The total fishing closure of Pender Bluffs and the proposed turning of it into a "no go zone" is the most vile action that DFO has dumped on the rec fleet. Because it only affects a relatively small number of fishers it never got the support it deserved and became cannon fodder. The "scientific" basis that DFO appears to have used is 10 years old, and even then does not show the need for such extreme measures. It is simply been written off by DFO as a sacrificial lamb in an attempt to appease the ENGOs who also have no idea of what is actually happening in this area. We have a home on Pender Bluffs and spend a lot of time there from May-Sept. Last year we saw no sightings of Orcas in May ,a couple in June, which may or may not have been SRKW, and the occasional pod in July and August that usually was traveling North in mid channel, towards Active Pass. We arrived today on Pender Bluffs, and will be here for a week. I spoke to my next door neighbour today, who is a full time resident, and they have not seen a pod of Orcas go by in the last month. This is identical to what we observed last year. All reports last year placed the SRKW off the mouth of JDFuca in May and June. Of course with the ridiculous non-retention of all Chinooks until Aug.1 , I guess trying to point out the stupidity of the scam imposed on Pender Bluffs is a waste of time. If there ever was an area that could be managed for the benefit of SRKW by a "bubble zone" this is it. Every pod of Orcas appears on the horizon being escorted by a dozen or two whale watching boats and can be spotted a couple miles away. Plenty of time to do the "bubble zone thing". But when did common sense ever be part of politics. Now we sit on the deck and remember what used to be...

Now we sit on the deck and remember what used to be...

I'd suggest we raise a stink and fight back. The complete closure is beyond absurd to the point where it appears it will ban a KAYAK. It is basically the entire "ocean season" that Penderites have been denied. With no on-island consultation and most certainly no meaningful consultation whatsoever. Victoria and Richmond sessions were focused on other areas, they didn't spend any meaningful time on the Gulf Islands.

I suspect Ms. May is getting a lot of phone calls from voters who won't be voting for her unless she does her job and gets this reversed. I'm hoping people go after Wilkinson's riding too - he doesn't deserve to be re-elected. A West Coast fisheries minister who fails the West Coast.

The reason the Pender /Saturna closure area came into being was because the largest number of complaints about whalewatching companies are generated from these waterfront residents , it has nothing to do with fish. It's all a media optics game. The reality is that most of the SRKW feeding happens in our prime recreational fishing areas.

Saw this CTV article showing decline in condition of J17 with pictures from September 2015.

https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/...s-for-southern-resident-mother-orca-1.4427667

It fails to mention she was in fact pregnant in the first picture! It only says she gave birth in the fall in the body of the article...the headline picture certainly doesn’t present the fact in an unbiased manner.

J17 gave birth in October 2015.

“The first snapshot, from September 2015, shows a robust and well-fed J17....”

How about PREGNANT!

Where is responsible news coverage?!?

People will read the headline, look at the picture and make their conclusion.

Pathetic.
