herring

I think there was some herring in Saanich Inlet during April last year. I am going to try for some this spring while I have my boat over there after prawns.

T2 - there was indeed a heavy spawn in Saanich inlet last year. It started at the entrance to the inlet in Deep Cove and then worked it's way over the next couple of weeks with spawning happening in through Pat Bay, Coles, etc. Unfortunately billions/trillions of eggs were laid on the creosote pilings in Deep Cove and died as a result but there was huge amounts of row on the seaweed that will do just fine. This year we(the Salish Sea Herring Enhancement Society) plan to help the little guys and cover the pilings with landscape cloth during the spawn to allow them to survive and multiply.

We jigged up a bucket in short order and had plenty of good hali and cut plugging bait for the year. We plan to do the same this year. It was a pretty impressive sight.

Here is a pic of some dead eggs...
