April 1 Fishing Regs-sell your Boats!!

It's sad. We should be taking our frustrations out on DFO and not each other.

We are only in this mess because of the well funded environmental organizations pushing for these closures. I keep saying it but some of you don't want too listen for some reason.

Look at Sooke every year lower FN wants to close it. That hasnt changed in 20 years. Now think about it what's different now? It is those groups like Raincoast and Watershed etc. That's your problem.

As for the interviews. I think you guys are getting your back up too fast. First of all no one is saying interviews were terrible.

The message though and timing was a little off. You can blame the department for that one. The media release for the whales was confusing. Media picked up on that and screwed up the overall message.

BTW thank you to Gord, Chris, and Trevor for doing the interviews....

What changes to the processes would you need to "step up" ? Remember that we are dealing with a Federal government entity that basically is being dominated by First Nations pandering and only willing to give us scraps.

More like environmental groups pandering

Well folks... my 2 cents from Alberta.
We used to go to Sooke at least 3 times a year.... not just for fishing... but loved the area. We did book fishing of course as we were able to get some tasty salmon for our freezers for the winter as it is hard to get out here. In the end, we bought our own boat... and decided to branch out and try other beauty spots on your amazing Island... love it there.....
Wolf... well... have to agree... from the outside, it does seem like the lower portion of the island is hit the hardest. Even for us who bring our own boat now... we all head north..... BUT WAIT!!!!! There is more!!!
Less than 3 hours ago.. Horgan announced no travelling into BC unless you want a fine! And further more... if you live in an "area"... you are to stay there! Fraser Valley people.. .better not go to the island. Live in Sooke and would like to fly fish the interior of BC... nope!
So... do the regs matter this year as much? I dont think so..
If I were lucky enough to live in any of your shoes.. I would be working together to try get anything done.
I have personally fought the Federal and Provincial governments for another cause and recently won!
It took a couple years.. but I did it.
I finally got some footing when I started sending invites for coffee meetings directly to people in charge, they are obligated to listen, and I found one person that opened some doors for me.
So as an outsider... (and sure to get some flack on this forum.. go for it).... I think now would be the time for you all to try get somewhere by contacting anyone who will listen. It works. Since Horgan has closed your entire economy down now, please go do something that night make a difference.
We from Alberta love coming out there and sampling your wares... we gladly pay for it, and we appreciate it.
You have the power to make changes.. bottom line is that it is your government. You can fight.... and trust me... you can win!
I did!
Regards,
(hope to see you all soon)

To be honest fellas, even if we had 10% of the anglers who purchased a saltwater license esch year get as pissed off as we are, we wouldnt be in this position. I dont understand why anglers in this province are willing to get up at the crack of dawn tongo fishing or spend up to hundreds of thosuands on a boat and gear, but when our sector is on the brink of life support the majority of our peers are silent and watch from the sidelines. The highest holding gov position in BC who should be representing the province and those who live in its best interest should be doing more. Horgans 1 letter to Bernadette at the final hour is not good enough. Looks at Albertas past premiers when they have issues oil related...thry are all over social media, in the news, out and vocal at saving thats province's jobs and their industry.... Horgan should bebin ottawa and on the phone regularly pushing for our best interest.

The Defense Rests!

YES but you do your business on the west side anyways so its really a mute point isnt it!!!!
Not trying to start anything here but Searun has a point about the news sewering the areas that are open by saying the entire coast is closed. It may not be as important as the areas that are shut down completely but it’s still a valid point. It sounds like he does business in areas that are open but lives where fishing is closed and maybe you should as well if you want to work.

The Travel restrictions are only until after the May Long Weekend, so not really prime fishing season for most areas. With any luck and more people vaccinated they will not be extended, so you will probably still be able to come.

And as long as we keep our $h¥t together and do our part to keep the spread to a minimum.

Not true. We’ve been down this road before in this country. Check your facts before you post.
Happy to be proven wrong !
Any chance you could be more specific about the road we’ve been down in the past ? Where basic liberties have been taken from people by the government and later given back?
Thank you

Wrong thread for this dragos.

But do some research on the preventive measures our countries took during the 1918 Spanish Flu for one. Just about the exact same things we are in now. Just in those days there wasn’t a million conspiracy theorists on the interweb. People in those days knew what hardship was and appreciated and respected the measures taken to assist them. If more people did the same today maybe we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in.

But again, wrong thread so don’t bother replying.

I will reply if I want to , all due respect but I don’t need your approval to do so. At least not yet

As was pointed out, this is thread is off topic. There is plenty of discussion in the Covid thread on that wonderful topic and it needs to stay there.

I live in WA but started SW fishing BC exclusively in the 1980's because what is going on in BC started down here in WA (it has only gotten worse over the last 40 years).
BC has had conservation based closures/restrictions since the mid 80's, but as a traveler, there were always open areas as there is now. It is also getting worse in BC. IMO the first BC area devastated by these restrictions was the Cambell River Area (area 13) in the 80's. Next in the 90's came Derby, Searun, & my area (23,24,25). Restrictions in these areas have eased, but the business's are gone forever.
Now it's Southern BC turn; with the SRKW issue to add.
IMO the problem is too many rods going after too few fish. Also fishery management has changed with the realization that despite large numbers of Hatchery fish, current fishery management practices dictate fishing must be limited to protect endangered wild runs; all of WA & most of BC Chinook are managed via the Pacific Salmon Treaty (PST) & respective governments by Individual Stock Based Management (ISBM). Offshore BC, Northern BC & SE Alaska are managed differently. Under ISBM, the Chinook Technical Committee via the regulations in the PST set mortality limits for each individual Chinook stock, and the general fishery is managed to not exceed there limits.
As an FYI there is also a Mass Marking/Mark Selectice Fishery Technical Committee with lot's of requirements.

There is a large amount of secrecy regarding the full process, especially the freedom of individual governments to restrict ISBM fishery's more than required by the PST. This is where the BC First Nations & WA Treaty Tribes come into play. Down here in WA, the Sportfishers are represented by WA Dept of Game & the Treaty tribes are equals to the WA Dept of Game as their own sovereign government & they negotiate in secret.
Not sure how BC works in this aspect.

IMO this has much more to do with not enough fish, not politics. We need to make the pie bigger (dream on) instead of fighting over how big our slice is.

If all of us in the closed South went to the open qareas how long do you really think that will last under our current federal government?

Fished Area 123 & 23 since early 80 and remeber those restrictions of the 90's.. Cut my teeth cutting plugging Active & Polier pass late 70's the Fraser River mouth (area 29) thru to mid 1990's when the GS became the Black hole ..grew up & lived in the Tsawwassen & Ladner so that was my stomping grounds .. moved to the island & live in the Area 17 which is now shut down like many other area's.. Not fun :( We are now going thru the processes that you have and changes.. More fish would make it a much easier process
