Sooke 2013 Fishing Reports

Autotether, installed one three years ago. They work and they're cheap. I also carry a PLB when I'm out solo off the Head.

This is a common problem for the rubbies who live on boats anchored in Sooke Harbour and along the Gorge, best advice is to stay below the deck durring prolonged drinking bouts... a **** bucket comes in handy, rather than hanging it over the gunnel and risking falling in. This guy was lucky to have someone save him, given the late time of night (10:45pm)

I just replaced my 10 yr old 'flip-phone' with a 'Samsung-Rugby' smartphone.

It's built to military-spec and is good for 1-hr @ 1-mtr depth.

So I'm supposing that if I ended up in the water and I could get it out of my belt-clip without dropping it, I could still make that call and order the pizza!

Fished from 8-12, Trailer Park, two Fish about 6Lbs, four other bumps. All Fish on Bait close to the Bottom in 110-140 Ft. Didnt like the Spoons today, great Water and a good Day , Driller

FN0059-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Fraser River Chinook - Areas 19 and 20 - Fishery Management Actions and Opening

The Department is continuing with management measures in 2013 designed to
reduce fishery exploitation rates on Fraser River Spring 4-2 chinook in
commercial, recreational and First Nations fisheries.

In 2013, Fraser River Spring 4-2 chinook are expected to return in low numbers
due to low brood year escapements and continuing poor survival rates. Fraser
River chinook stocks begin returning through the Victoria Area in March.

DFO has consulted with the Sport Fishing Advisory Board (SFAB) on an approach
for 2013. The SFAB has requested DFO announce these opportunities for March 1,
2013 and provide updates on further management measures when additional
information and analysis becomes available in mid-June.

Management measures for the recreational fishery in portions of Areas 19 and 20
are outlined below.

Effective 00:01 hours March 1, 2013 until 23:59 hours June 15, 2013 in Subareas
19-1 to 19-4 and Subarea 20-5(those waters near Victoria between Cadboro Pt to
Sheringham Pt.), the daily limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day which may be
wild or hatchery marked between 45 cm and 67 cm or hatchery marked greater than
67 cm in length.

Note: Management measures to protect and conserve Fraser River Spring 4-2,
Spring and Summer 5-2 Chinook stocks of concern will also be required after
June 15. Specific actions will be based on an assessment of returns of these
stocks to the Fraser River as outlined in Appendix 6 of the 2012/13 Southern BC
Salmon Integrated Fishery Management Plan. An update on these management
measures will be announced in a subsequent fishery notice in June.

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia.

Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye. These fish are
hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase the
numbers of Cultus Lake sockeye.

The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the voluntary Salmon Sport Head
Recovery program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped
chinook and coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical
information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head
Recovery Program at (866) 483-9994 for further information.

Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to all
fin fishing. Descriptions of these closures, and other recreational fishing
information, can be found on the Internet at:

Catch on release for a few months again.....Man how I miss the May/Early June fishery without these restrictions......So is the limit on the nets across lower Frasier this year same restriction, or....

....or another season of viking law? Rape, Pillage, leave nothing for the next....kind of like a 'scorched river' policy.

Reduction! Reduction! Reduction!

Again, same old **** from the people charged with the responsible stewardship of our fisheries.

Instead of the hackneyed 'reduction mantra' in DFO and the Harper government, it will be nice when the day arrives - and it will - when they finally announce...

FN0069-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Fraser River Chinook - Areas 19 and 20 - Fishery Management Actions and Opening

Recent habitat-enhancement measures coupled with vastly improved catch-monitoring and enforcement across ALL fisheries sectors have permitted the lifting of all previous restrictions on Early Timed Fraser Chinook. Henceforth, the 'slot' size will be lifted as we at DFO have finally 'dummied-up' to the idea that you Rec-fishing guys spend a ****-load of money each year for every pound of fish you catch. We can no longer remain oblivious to the fact that the Recreational Fishery is - pound for pound - far and away the 'best-use' benefit to the Provincial economy.

Moreover, at the direction of our boss, Mr. Harper, from this day forward, DFO will cease all subsidies to the salmon-farmers and re-direct these much needed funds towards habitat enhancement initiatives to benefit British Columbia's wild Pacific fisheries.

Again, we apologize for being such collusive, mindless idiots for the last 25 yrs.

"I had a dream...."

DFO doesn't care about the provincial economy until we make politicians squirm like the natives or put money in the Feds pockets like the commercials we are last in line.

I don't fish too much in may/June how many fish are you guys throwing back because they are too big? I have yet to catch an ET Fraser they were basically wiped out before I got my boat. My kid will probably say the same thing except replace ET Fraser with just Fraser. Soooo sad.

I can say from experience last year I let at least 50-60 wild fish go from end of march untill June 15th

Very spotty... best describes winter spring fishing this year, fewer visits by sporadic feeders and apparent lack of bait fish appear to be contributingfactors in this winter’s low catch rates.
Yesterday, judging from short glances into passing forummembers boats and their subsequent bored looks held little promise for a good afternoonbite; undaunted we pushed on… four hours later we had 1- 7lb to show for our efforts; taking full advantage of quality fishing time and thereturn flood troll > the Trap… yaaawn, I had a cat nap to prepare me for the partyrigors of UFC fight night :)

I was gonna hit Sidney yesterday, but too windy and fishing partner too hungover, so headed to Sooke. Fished from 1230-330 around Secretary and across the flats towards the bluffs once the tide slowed down. One about ten pounds lost beside the boat, one tiny shaker, and a great porpoise show around the boat to add some excitement. Only one other boat out there, but too far to see if they had any luck.

Nautigal, that is a drag when you loose the fish of the day at the side of the boat, I guess that's why it's called fishing...:)

I also enjoyed the little porpoise show last Sat...last year provided some spectacular marine wild life moments, looks like we're off to a good start......

Out today to do a short fish then to pull the boat to clean it and take it home for some maintenance. Fished Beecher Bay 10:30 to 2:00 pm. Had one bite at 11:00 am at 150 ft. on the rigger which resulted in a 13 lb. hatchery chinook. Caught one coho grilse at 170 ft.???, no other bites. Upon talking to Jay at the marina there was one fish yesterday and one the day before seen at Cheanuh. Still very few fish around and little bait.
