SFBC Braggarts Fishing Derby

All the vendors have tickets now and west Coast Tire has joined us as a sponsor. Sometimes things happen for a reason. This was to be our original derby weekend. With the wind here now I'm glad we had to change it.

I went out to Keating to have a peak at the "Banana" trophy that is being made for the winner of the largest salmon in this Father's Day weekend derby. It is awesome!!! Dave the artist who agreed to take this on is making some additional modifications to put it over the top. This includes a size proportionate Chinook salmon being held up over the banana characters head. Guys this thing is way cool and one of a kind! The custom halibut trophy is also under construction and will be just as unique.
Adrena Line Adventure Tours in Sooke is the latest to join us as a sponsor.

Latest sponsors include Canpro Construction, Belmont Collision, Innovative 3D CAD Design, Caird Mechanical, Island Highway Automotive, Mark's Work Wearhouse (Langford) and Trotac. Prizes are really starting to pile up and the interest is really building. I will have a complete rules list posted by May 1st and a prize list posted towards the end of May when sponsor recruitment nears an end. We will be selling tickets for both a salmon and a halibut side bet at $50.00 each. We will pick a night in late May when we will be at the Station House Pub in Langford to sell both regular and side bet tickets. We will do this again for a few hours the night before the derby to give out of towners a chance to get in on it as well. We will have a local business on site at Pedder Bay making and selling derby T-Shirts. They will have a bunch of different shirts, colours and sizes available. They will also have credit card service. The derby will get a portion of those sales. We are also planning a 50/50 draw with those proceeds going to the Charters River side channel project that has the green light and the work is scheduled to be done this summer. This side channel will increase the rearing capability for Coho and Chum greatly and will have immediate positive results!!! Also, thanks to the people who are working on their own time (without being asked) to raise money or prizes from their employers, suppliers, or associates. That is really appreciated.

Some more good news today. Gary Cooper is going to shoot the Banana Challenge and make it an episode of Nice Fish. He will fish in his own boat with a camera crew and I will also have a camera person on board with my crew. Mt Washington Ski Resort is now a sponsor. More to come in the next couple of days.

Great work Pro. This is going to be one hell of an event!

Ok guys as promised the rules and such by May 1st. I will post that in part two of this post and will also send a copy to Kelly to post up in the derby section which keeps it up front and easy to find. But first I want to explain the side bets. There will be a salmon side bet and also a halibut side bet. You may buy one or the other or both. The tides are good on the Father's Day weekend so combo trips to try and win both will be very doable. Cost of either ticket is $50 each per person. I have printed off 400 salmon side bet tickets which means if we sell them out there will be a $20,000 cash prize for the winner! I'm printing 250 halibut side bet tickets, allowing for less people who will fish halibut. If we sell all 250 it will be a $12,500 cash prize for the winner!
You must have a regular derby ticket before you can purchase a side bet ticket. Side bet tickets will be available on Tuesday May 21st at Buffy"s Pub in Sooke from 7pm until 9pm. Then again on Wednesday May 22nd at the 6 Mile Pub in Colwood from 5pm until 9pm. We will be in the lower room behind the bar and closest to the hwy at the 6 Mile. SVIAC is also having a guide's night on the same date so we are killing two birds with one stone. We will also sell side bet tickets for a couple of hours on Friday June 14th, time and location to be announced.
So that is the side bets in a nut shell. Now it is up to you guys to make this the derby it deserves to be. The more tickets we sell the bigger the cash prizes will be. Lets make the 2013 Father's Day weekend almost as good as it used to be when we had a JDF Derby to look froward to!!

Who is stepping up for next year??!! Great idea to pass the torch so to speak at the closing ceremonies.

We could do a draw prize based on a photo of a fish that was released with proof the picture was taken and the right dates. Would just be a straight draw from those submitted, don't want to get into picking the biggest from a pic. Opens up the real possiblity for an argument.

Naw, thinking just like outfitters did it - random draw on any wild that had to be released - nothing to do with size. Phone/camera timestamps could be easy enough - picking up item night before to have in picture a little tricky like they did since ticket meeting is well before...

We could just announce an every day item that every household has to include in the photo. Announce the item here the night before the derby starts.

Rule clarification here...

Area 18, 19, and 20 are supposedly legal to fish. Well the main area of the derby is Sooke - victoria (weigh in at pedder bay) and this area has a slot limit on wild springs while the other areas don't. Are you going to accept a 33lb wild fish from the gulf islands or renfrew and declare it the winner after honest Sooke fishermen had to release a 35#'r?

Sorry if this has been answered.

If you enter the salmon side bet for a chance at the big money...which unfortunately seems to be what ultimately sells tickets then you will most likely be fishing west of Sheringham to Bonilla Point or in area 18. The halibut side bet could be won anywhere. All other prizes are by draw, just catch a salmon or halibut and it will be an equal chance to win. The idea here was to include as many people on the south Island not only to support the people who live in the area who are on this forum but also to have a large part of the area represented by SVIAC open as well. I'm just working with the rules that DFO gives us. BTW, what are they? LOL We don\t even know for sure if we will be one wild over or not yet in 19 & 20. This is why George gave up with the JDF!!! Makes it almost impossible to plan a derby in the traditional format. By going this route you guys know for sure there are areas open where you can catch your trophy Chinook and win a sizable payout for your efforts.

We don't even know if by June 15th we are in the slot area!!! If we are classified as zone 2 we can keep one over if zone 1 we can't.

BTW guys this Saturdays dance at Hermann's Jazz Bar is still going to happen but not as a derby event. we kept the room and the "Consenting Adults" are performing. A big group of us are taking the ladies out for dinner downtown close to the club. Then walking over after dinner. Mother's Day dinner and night out on the town. Cover is $5.00 at the door. Hermann's is located on View St. just west of Blanshard/View St intersection.

After some thought today, how about if I printed off a 3 rd side bet ticket option? $50 for the largest hatchery salmon. So everyone no matter where they fish will be able to buy the side bet tickets that give them the best odds based on where they plan to fish.
