What do I have to gain?, everything that Harper stands for is totally wrong. No Aboriginal Econmic package? He killed the 1 Billion dollar deal that was worked out just before he took office. I also happen to be in favour of decriminalization of Marijuna, he also killed that law that was about to pass before he took control. At least now we can move on with some issues that actually matter to the average canadian, not just more money for the far right. I happen to like the middle left ground rather then leaning to a socialist state. My god if Harper had his way every Canadian would have the same hunting and fishing rights!!!!![xx(]
Take only what you need.
Here's my view from the Harper side of the table, I've swung somewhat conservative in the last couple of years simply because our Conservatives today are like the Liberals were 20 years ago. If we're just debating politics, here is what I think:
Why exactly does Aboriginal descent qualify one for a handout? Technically I'm aboriginal, because I'm %50 descended from East Russian folk, who came across the Bering Sea Land Bridge 40,000 years ago to North America. I should qaulify for something since I bet I'm related to our native folk somehow.
Decriminilizing pot would offer very small gains for the average Canadian, and a very big problem in offending our neighbor to the south. Before the "American Imperial Empire" chants start flying, they account for somewhere in the neighborhood %70 of our exports. Although it's morally wrong to dance to the beat of thier drum, it's also important to keep the money flowing our way instead of keeping the Blunt Brothers Cafe on the cover of High Times. Besides, I was a stoner in my somewhat younger years, I seem to remember one had to be a real idiot to actually get in trouble for being caught with dope. Nor do I ever recall it helping me with a headache, back pain, or any other medical issue, but maybe that was just me. The other argument would be why stop at dope, LSD, Mushrooms, DMT and MDMA are also not physiaclly addictive. Cigs and Booze were here too long, they are our vices, and that' probably where it will stay for a while. We can't get rid of them, because the last time we tried, it gave birth to modern organized crime. Most of the people in our contry who would consider themselves established oppose decrim anyway, otherwise, some campaign consultant would have made it the cornerstone of a campaign as it's a hot button issue. Maybe if more pot smokers voted, this issue would have some more clout behind it, but alas, like the Green Party, I just don't think enough people are interested.
The far right typically has more money the the far left because they got off their arse, moved out before they were 30, and took up a vocation that didn't involve wondering why a masters in Medevil History doesn't qualify them as the CEO of Haliburton. If they (the evil right wing businesspeople)had to break a couple of eggs to make their omlette, so be it, this is a country that rewards someone for hard work, not for their ability to write a proposal indicating their worthiness of a handout.
I THINK that we need smaller government that gets out of the way of people, that doesnt' cost us a fortune, and, last but not least, does not nanny adult Canadians. Keep us healthy, keep invaders out of the country, keep the roads and the lights on, give us a stable currency, and keep out of our way.
And leave people responsible for their own actions. If I gambled on being able to support myself for the rest of my life bolting wheels onto a car for $38 per hour, then wonder what the hell I'm going to do being 50 and watching the factory close, I should only thank myself.
If we all had the same hunting rights, that could be either good or bad, as that would mean we could only fish and hunt during the day with sport gear, or we could all chase fish and whales with jet boats and mono gillnets across rivers.
Bear in mind, these are just thoughts, not jabs.
