Winter spring fishing on fire!!!

Wolf - What are your reasons for preferring Strip or Whole herring over plug? What about anchovies? or are we using herring/anchovy interchangeably?

Also, for those that don't have a decent downrigger setup, would you suggest heavy weights or planers to get down far enough? I realize the planer would obviously require some decent trolling speed, so maybe that's the answer right there....

Gotta try modifying my cartopper to get my downrigger to work right.

Pablo during the winter most bait is herring from the 6 to 12 inch range i use strip or whole herring as it doesnt blow up going down to 120 to 200 ft and strip is definatlly very easy to fish just put it in and send her down cut plug is a bit more fussy,in the summer bait tends to be more needle fish and very small herring that why we use chovies its easy but i do fish winters with chovies as well I use a dummy flasher set up so as to not to catch so many cod etc your up from the bottom more thens it just you and the fish very fun!!!!!!!!also one pice of strip you will sometimes get 4 or more fish on it as the hook isnt in the bait.

Good luck Wolf

Yes I looked out there today Kelly and started getting the itch worked on my boat instead ill be out there for the derby on sat. are you in it???

Boy did I ever have a heck of a fight with a seal with my spring in it's mouth off Clover pt 2day. But for the first time ever I WON!!!
The spring's jaw was all hanging off and my hook was almost bent
45 o but I just kept gunning the big motor on top of him until he gave up. he he. the *******!
Not alot of fish 2day when I asked around......
the 1 I got was stuffed with 4"herring.
Crabbing is good.
see ya

whats going off the waterfront???

i saw lots of boats at least 15 between clover point and the breakwater. is the fishing that good off there right now?

Today was terrible off the waterfront lots of seals and tonnes of sealions out at constance.
I'll stick to Sooke Thanks .:(

Hasn't this guy flown in and out of here before peddling his site ?
Any way to to block him , pain in the butt , if I wanted to go elsewhere to talk to fisherman I can surf my own way around , and I resent being yapped at like that , worse than the goddam telemarketers !

I'll be out there around 8ish. Escortin my buddy with his new centre console while he breaks it in. I was using a variety of spoons last time I was out, as well as strip with no flasher, it seemed pretty good at 200 feet. You really can't go wrong this time of year, if you don't have action in 10 mins, move or change something. And troll fast (I hope you have 15 pounders), you have to cover ground if they don't co-operate. Of course, if the bite is on right outside of the breakwater, disregard the above post.

Sooke was slower today only 10 fish four to the boat all action was between 80 -100 feet crabbing was awesome for once great big dungeoness crabs. So all in in all not bad for for 3 hours fishing.
