If you just want buckets of herring, take some buckets down to the docks when the herring boats come back in. Lots of herring under the floor boards of the herring skiffs can be had very cheap if you help them clean out their boats?........BB

I gotta ask--what do you do once you get a couple of buckets? Every time I jig up a gorgeous pile of green and blue label herring, all I get for my efforts when trying to brine them is mush and belly blow-out

What's the secret to putting up bulk live herring (short of putting them in a pen and giving them bread and water)?

Nothing complicated. I just put the herring on a coarse screen and gently hose them down to get rid of the sperm & snot. Try not to wash off scales. Package them for butts one dozen to a ziplock, with a hand full of rock salt. Remove as much air as possible ,and into the freezer. Good for hali/ling bait for two years. I also high grade small (6-7") from the rest and take a lot more care of them so I can use them for salmon.
