If you can see your balls, chances are you are going too slow. Even with my 50/200 khz I can't see my gear when fishing at Chinook speeds. Sockeye fishing it is visible.
agree. Or if you are fishing VERY shallow.
 
Hi Seafever. Narrower beam equals deeper penetration as you have the same power concentrated in a smaller area but.........

The "deep penetration" is primarily for water 1000 or more feet deep where Billfish tend to run at when they are not feeding - they come-up to investigate the noise of the boat, see the surface-trolled gear, & strike.

If your balls are within the cone angle of your transducer, you could probably see them with 5 Watts of power; they are hard & reflect the transmitted sonar pulse very well.
