Transporting Fish

Does anyone know for sure what the rules are of transporting someone else fish? One of the other forums says it’s against the law to transport others fish and then others say it’s okay if you have a letter, identified fish and where you are transporting to.

The letter thing was ok a couple of years ago but it has been rescinded-if not last year then the year before. It'll be in the regs somewhere-just do a search for transporting fish.

Recently (Aug 31), I contacted DFO about this. You may transport someone else's fish as long as it does not exceed your possession limit. Here is their response:

"Thank you for contacting the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

With regards to your question, as Per s. 13(1) of the BCSFR:

13 (1) No person shall possess more fish of a species, other than halibut, except at the person’s ordinary residence, than twice the daily quota for fish of that species prescribed by these Regulations.

An individual may transport fish up to his or her own possession limit, regardless of who caught the fish (e.g. if the possession limit for all salmon is eight, I can carry two of mine and any combination of others fish as long as the total doesn’t exceed eight).

It was determined in about 2015 that the Department doesn’t have authority to override the regulation by use of a letter, which up to then was used to allow someone to carry fish in excess of the possession limit. That practice was removed from the Sportfishing Guide and single possession limits are now enforced.

FN0409-RECREATIONAL - General Information - Clarification of "Possession Limits" for the purpose of transporting fish

This notice is to clarify the possession limits for the purpose of transporting
fish.

The British Columbia Sport Fishing Regulations state that you may possess only
twice the daily retention limit of all species (except halibut, as set out in
the Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence). This possession limit applies per
person whether you or someone else caught the fish.

You may transport another person's sport caught fish, as outlined below,
provided that the total of all fish possessed does not exceed the possession
limit for each individual species prescribed by regulation or by licence
condition.

To transport another person's sport caught fish, you must carry a letter from
that person with their signature and Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence number,
stating you are authorized to transport the fish.

The letter must state:
- The fisher's name
- Complete address and telephone number
- Fishing licence number
- When and where the fish were caught
- The number, species and size of fish
- Name and address of recipient
- Estimated date of arrival
- Reason for transport

The person who asked you to transport recreationally caught fish should also
retain a copy of the letter of authorization.

If you are not a Canadian resident, check with customs officials in your
country for regulations concerning importation of your catch.

Heres another question.

Can someone without a license transport your fish. That’s one I don't see covered.

Interesting, trying to remember last I was checked how many fish I had in the cooler, more then 1 Hali for sure, and more then 4 chinook too

It appears it was amended in 2015 as per the post above this one.
