Well, from what I saw out there in my 2 hours this afternoon. Things are looking up. Saw loads of bait off bedfords. Marked a few nice fish. I picked up a 42 pound ling. Was the biggest local ling ive caught in my life. Only one ive gotten bigger was at Ukee and was 46 pounds. Sockey open 4 per day starting at midnight tonight! Think I might go out and give that a go tomorrow!

Good Luck!

-Steve

Fished 7 hours today from Beechy to trap and back to alridge. Had a few bites. Released 2 small springs and 1 sockeye. Lost a 15lb spring to a sealion. wow I fought it for 20 minutes before he ripped the body from the head. I got all my gear back and I lovely head with no gills nothing in it. Wow. He was like 1000lbs. Crazy. He almost spooled my in about 30 secs. Started the boat and chased him.

Subject: FN0594-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - South Coast - Recreational sockeye retention in Southern B.C. Marine Waters

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The current status of the Fraser River sockeye return provides for recreational
sockeye retention opportunities in most Southern B.C. marine waters.

Effective 00:01 hours Thursday August 05, until further notice, in those waters
open to salmon fishing in the following Areas, the daily limit for
recreationally caught sockeye is four (4) per day:

- Areas 11, 111, 12 and 13 (Queen Charlotte Sound, Queen Charlotte Strait,
Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage);

- Areas 14 to 19 (Strait of Georgia);

- Area 20 (Juan de Fuca Strait);

- Areas 21, 24 to 27, 121 and 123 to 127 (West Coast of Vancouver Island) Note
that Area 23 is currently open to the retention of sockeye targeting Barkley
Sound sockeye;

- Area 28 (Howe Sound, Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm);

- Area 29 - (Subareas 29-1 to 29-5)
Note that opportunities in the remainder of Area 29 including the tidal
portions of the Fraser River will be provided by separate fishery notice.

Sockeye retention is not permitted in the following areas:

- In Nitinat Lake (Area 22);

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia. This includes all species of fish in the Fraser
River.

Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye. These fish are
hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase the
numbers of Cultus Lake sockeye.

The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the voluntary Salmon Sport Head
Recovery program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped
chinook and coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical
information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head
Recovery Program at (866) 483-9994 for further information.

Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to all
fin fishing. Descriptions of these closures, and other recreational fishing
information, can be found on the Internet at:

The last sockeye opening I remember in Sooke a few years ago we were catching a lot of them out a ways, about the third tide line and deep, 80 to 120 feet. I am also interested where they are being caught this year and depth. Hoping to get out Sat.

I was just near otter normally you dont get that many in tight but yes your right about going out further for them you watch now !! yur going to seee lots of boats out fishing now,What ive normally done in the past is go out of the harbour start in 150 ft head south, then just keep going and watch other boats go north to south dont go with or against the current you really want to cover ground and then find them. Once you get into them just go around in big circles this is where that chartplotter realy comes into effect.

ive gota ton of hotchies in a variety of colors rick ill make you up a care package hopefully we can meet up this weekend. call me on my cel im in most late afternoons

Good luck Wolf

Thanks Roy. I guess I will be digging out the old all painted bright red/orange or pink metal flashers and dodgers. Some of them have Sockeye stamped right into them.

first trip in awhile. Watched the sun come up at otter point. AND IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!
I got my tackle box all organised while I was out there. Got my hooks all sharpened while I was out there. Cockpit all cleaned and organised. Gps options figured out.
I didn't have to worry about fish buggering up my lines or fish slime making a mess.
It was incredible. I can't wait to go out again.
saw a couple of small caught but otherwise alot of nets stayed in the holders

lololol

funny I did the same thing a few weeks ago as well. Tried to figure out the toilet system in my boat once and for all. ( never had the time since I bought it to figure it out ) With fishing as good as it's been ;) I figured I'd make the best of it out there.

Was out with Yammy5 and my Dad this morning, picked up five springs in pretty short order, two on our first pass, was nice to get into some fish today. Nothing big biggest was 18lbs. but great scrappers! full of energy great fighting fish. Wind came up and spoiled our efforts for a limit. Trolled around for a bit out in the slop for some Sockeye, could not find one ended up just trolling it down..

I finaly made my first salmon trip of the year, started at possesion pt. and made a couple of passes at first light and had gotten one strike and nothing else so I decided to try chasing sockeyes. went straight south till I bumped into them which was at between 350 ft and 400ft depth. lost the first two and managed to keep the next four,then called a day as it was getting lumpy out.all in all it was a great first day out there. heard a few other guys had got some too :) hopefully will be able to get back out this weekend :)

out with my honey today landed a#21 she did a great job netting it[:X] hooked a sockeye but it 6 ft & shook the hook all hits were @ 60ft 250-300ft mark decent bite around 11am it was a little sloppy on the chuck so only stayed out 2 hours
