Not much happening today for myself. The Americans were getting them on the Port Ang side of the strait. Back at it again tomorrow..

I know there was a pig war...how about the "War of the Silvers"...

Covered alot of water again today, had a few wilds to the boat in tighter, not very steady action to say the least. Lots off shakeres out in the 550 - 650 line.

Sammy you bump your noggin on the wheelhouse again? lol.

That's silvers(Coho)not slivers...anyhoo hope I'll have a fishing report manana ;) SS

It was slow for me yesterday too. Lots of shakers jumping everywhere but they didn't bug me to much on the gear. I didn't get out into much more than 325 feet of water because the last time I did the shakers wouldn't stop jumping on the gear out there. To hard to fish effectively when they are dragging behind without you knowing it. Apparently Damaniel Creek is loaded with Coho already...heard that today. They are getting past us somewhere.

Today was a tad slow picked up a few feeders then sat back & watched the orca show, lrg pod & several breaches...even had a pack of sea lions hide under the boat.Bedfords seemed to be the spot with #21 spring & a sockeye? taken.Finished off with another ling :) before the season closes :(...all n all a nice warm/calm fall day...SS

Yep another slower day. A few small feeders and a couple fish lost, could only say 1 was a coho for sure. Had a great Humpback Whale show, somehow missed the resident Orca's later in the morning. The two humpy's goofed around on the surface for quite some time, raising their tail flukes and fins in unison. Then a full breach before they headed off.

was dead sea for us on Friday as well besides shakers and 1 wild, but beautiful out there - the question I have though was what the heck was all those low deep multiple booms towards the Olympics? They seemed too repetitive to be thunder, and then I found it more interesting when it looked like a military boat or something barreling off that way and then the low continued flyover by the plane a little later...anyone with insight? Went on sporatically for like an hour.

I was camping at sandcut beach earlier this summer, woke up early and watched a navy boat, I believe american, doing live fire exercises with a number of different caliber guns.
Even though it was several K away, I could see the splashes from the guns after the booms. quite a sight and sound.

There were US helicopters doing exercises last week, could have been them firing rounds.

seems logical - it had cleared up enough over there that I figured you could see some large ship or something, and the fact that there seemed to be some Canuck military scoping things out made me wonder. Nothing else logical though, so must have been it. Guess it must have spooked the fish cause they sure weren't biting and there were tons being marked...ha

I've been marking some bigger schools of fish as well and do every year at this time. They are Chums and as usual they don't bite very often. Chum tend to school up in quite compact groups....Coho less so. If I see only singles, pairs or scattered sounder marks I assume Springs or Coho depending on the time of year and where I'm at. Large tightly packed marks..sockeye, pinks or chum..again when and where helps figure out which ones they most likely are....catching one really nails it.

logical...thx. There was a huge pocket of fish off Secretary and towards the Possession reef - few big pockets off the Secretary ledge too. So I wonder, I know the goldstream chum don't bite, but what would make the Campbell River chum fishery so good if the Sooke fish don't bite either?? I assume they are heading into the Campbell up there, so mindset would be the same being not far from the mouth (it was my favorite fishery when I lived up there). Why isn't it a gangbusters fishery here as well?

I am not sure why one run might be different from another, but in the estuary around Sooke and through to the campground, I can usually get a few to strike on a fly each time I go out. Great runs in shallower water too. I have seen them follow it lots, but the strikes seem more aggressive attacks. Fish with PMS. More likely to strike in anger than follow a usual feeding pattern.LOL. I have the best results so far with a red bead/bullet head fly made from silver tinsel. Flash to entice and irritate, and red to trigger their usual feeding pattern from their ocean feed.

Just an update on the Fishing Seminar I'm organizing. We have a date set for November 12th from noon to 4pm at the Charters River Salmon Interpretive Centre. We will have tickets out soon for 100 people at $25.00 per person. Still working on a couple more guest speakers. To date I have Tom Davis, Malcolm Russell and myself. Waiting to hear back from a couple of others. Chris Bos has agreed to MC the afternoon and will also give a forecast of the 2012 halibut fishery. Hope to have tickets available at Outfitters, Trotac, Westshore Sportfishing and Eagle Eye. We hope those attending will come a bit early and have a look around at the Charters River restoration work that has been completed and also the new centre and hatchery. Should be lots of salmon in the river at this time.

I'm hoping I can get them out by next week.
