Radar question JRC 1500 MKII

I have the JRC 1500 MKII on my boat. I was curious if you can update the display to one of the more modern versions or do you have to buy a whole new unit. Mine is working fine but I was thinking maybe the dome would send a signal to a new display unit, with the GPS overlays etc. I'm guessing not but thought I'd ask.

I called Harbour Chandler and asked this question, and as I had guessed, the unit would not work with the new displays.

I believe you can add a fluxgate compass to get the radar overlay.

Hi Casper, I'm sorry but I don't understand what you are suggesting as I'm not up on the intricacies of what you can do with radar. Where would the radar overlay go to.

The radar overlays on your chartplotter. So you would have your JRC screen with just your radar display showing and your GPS display showing your Chartplotter screen with the radar image displayed over top of the chart. But you do need the Fluxgate compass to make it work or a autopilot which would have the compass with it.

All you need is the Lowrance heading sensor, I installed it and it sure is nice to have the radar image overlaid on chart.

Look at the lowrance point 1 antenna
It will give you overlay for a lot less than the FC40
