Browns Bay Chum Derby

It should be mandatory up that anybody going out on the water now should have a gps a radio and a compass the cost of all that would be less than 400 dollars not a lot for the cost of saving your life. WHENS the last time you heard of a charter boat sinking or calling the coast gaurd for help not to damn often but yet we pay the highest insurance costs ever for the guys out there that dont go out prepared.

Well, the fishery has recovered after the commercial seine opening last Monday.
Limited with 8 within 3 hours this morning at Deepwater. Still nice chromes and up to 18 pounds. Rained all morning and the bite started at 9:00. Shaping up to be a great derby this coming weekend. Have a great Thanksgiving....

So from what you are saying BO, it seems the chum aren't hanging at one specific Bay on always the same tide - last week for sure it was Deepwater Bay on the ebb, Plumper on the flood, now the opposite? I guess it's just where they feel like being at one time, and then the start of the tides will spur the feeding frenzy. Seem accurate enough?

Many boats out there? Probably most scared off by the weather. Hopefully getting out there in the morning for one last go.

Right now they are EVERYWHERE, but the flood seems to be the best bite. Lots of reports today of fish in Green Sea, Kanish,Deepwater and Plumper.. The fresher ones are north but even the ones in Plumper are not turned at all. On the flood tides they seem to concentrate on the southerly sides of the bays, but there are so mobile that you can even pick them up in the eddy's and father out into the open Strait. I have at least five different lures they're taking depending on the light conditions. Lost one of my fave flashers to a bigg'un..Purple with a white flash..I'm gonna miss that one ..watched it for about 10 minutes 10 feet below us, then dragged straight down...probably in Comox by now..

Well, it only took me 23 years of fishing, but finally got thoroughly checked out by an officer. Huge road check set up near Duncan Bay - like 5 cop cars out there and the conservation dude. Checked license, my chum (only 3 and lost 4....bad catch ratio today but 3 got off pretty quick), commented on my tire pressure and greasing my trailer axle, then talked a little about the fishing in general (chit chat). No problems that my buddy didn't have a license - he was basically my netter as it was, but I was running 2 rods (not that it says anything about that in the reg's anyway). I have only known 1 person, 2 rods, 2 people 3 rods....no clue if someone in the boat doesn't have a license. Anyhow, officer obviously saw the 2 rods but didn't question it at all, so I assume it's your daily limit that is the main concern with license numbers...

Wonder how the buddy behind did though - was in a huge boat and had been up at Stuart Island for a week - mentioned he had limited out every day. That should have been nervewracking for him with probably 20 salmon in his boat!

Funny thing was (and I've done it before when pulled over by cops), was he asked where we lived and I blurted out Victoria....I live in CR though Whoops. Having recently moved I guess I sort of forgot and went with where I've lived the longest!

Survived anyway.

Doing the chum thing I wish I brought out my fish finder. Was fishing mostly 80 feet and was getting nothing - tried one rod at 20 since they were jumping like crazy, nothing...few hours in I split at 55 and all the sudden it was a mad house - the 7 on where in the span of about an hour. Largest was 10 male and it easily gave me a tougher fight than the 20 spring I caught up at Malcolm Island. Like people say, I was amazed at the strength.

Nice forecast weatherman...way the hell off!

i heard that there is a ton of coho being caught around browns bay. any truth to this rumor? also is there any more commercial openings scheduled?
thanx

Nice job DW25...I too was lifting my rigs this week and found that when the bite comes on, its seems to be at the exact depth that I just went to.....

Thanks for the heads up with the CO's...I've been checked twice in the last 15 years..once in Sooke in 91 and again this last May at Cape Mudge (checking for barbs)..The fella behind you, though, may have some splain'n to do, Lucy!!!!

EE..Haven't seen any Coho caught in the last week up there, although there should be some stragglers in the kelp, I would think.

I'm going to go out on limb here DW25 and guess that you were using hootchies..Those long releases can be solved by lengthening your hook to hootchie ratio by adding another swivel with a splt ring so the back of the hook is about 1/4 inch longer that the tassles.
Just a thought...paul

boc

Yeah, that makes sense Paul on these hootchies (the J300 easily my best performer (pink/black). It's no problem with the regular ones as I buy bulk and rig with the silver inserts and tandam hookups. I should have paid more attention though to these commercial ones other than just hook shape and sharpness. Just lazy with them being pre-rigged and not easily modified. May look into that if I decide to go out next weekend - wife seems much more tolerable to me fishing when I'm bringing back supper

So what would happen to the fisher behind me. He said he was in the cabin for a week and returning home. I assumed he had all fish with him, but a weeks limit is uhm, a few more than 8! Could he get fined say $100 for every fish over??? What about the wive's tale of them actually confiscating boats and rods etc, does that, can that happen, or is that not realistic at all.

Thanks for the tip on the hootchie, obvious, but I didn't consider it.
EE, there were a few boats in the morning fishing the wall north of Browns Bay, but that was the extent of what I saw.

dave

Dave,
Here's what the regs say:
"Penalties for contravention of the British Columbia Sport Fishing Regulations include voluntary ticket payments up to $1,000 and possible seizure and forfeiture of fishing gear and catch, or court-imposed fines up to $100,000 on first offence and possible court-imposed forfeiture of fishing gear, catch, vessel or other equipment used in the commission of an offence. Licences may also be suspended or cancelled"
Up to the CO's call..If the fisherman is obnoxious and ignorant to the CO, he's done for the year.
Reminds me of earlier this year when I took a client out and he refused to buy a license (I always ask to see it)..turned around and took him back to the resort he was staying at. The one and only client that I didn't have a great time with.
Anyways I digress..too much turkey

I believe that if everyone in the boat is not licensed, then it's one rod for each licensed angler.

1 rod per licenced fisherman if you have 3 guys and 2 only have licences you can only fish 2 rods if all of you have licences you can fish as many rods as you want go figure (dumb DFO)
I did see it in the great big huge book of ALL the regulations on fishing remember that the tiny little booklet is only a synopsis of all the regs its your responsibility to check as to what you can and cant do all it takes is a simple phone call its better to be safe than sorry DFO really dont care if you make a simple mistake there only there to enforce the rules the usuall response you will get if you do break the law is "tell it to the judge" heard it so many times down at the dock from people taking undersized crab and even a guy this year who thought that the yellow brownish rock cod that he jigged up(10 of them) were perch and he swore up and down thats what they were even after dfo showed him what a perch looked like man he get a nice fine.So the moral is make sure what your doing out there.

Good luck Wolf

hmm, well that shouldnt make things too bad for the weekend hopefully. I'm wondering if there will be a billion boats there again?

Todays report:
Windy, lots of fish, and not a gill net to be seen.
Don't know if the PSAC strike has an effect on the fisheries observers but that may explain why there was no commercials today???
And yes, there should be lots of boats on the weekend, but there is no real reason to bunch up as there are even fish on the east side of the Staits. I was tucked up close to the north side of Deepwater today (lee side of the wind) and was averaging one fish every 10 minutes. Except for one big male (released, so we can save him for the weekend ) all were bright and fiesty..See you all there..

sounds great blue, hopefully the wind will be nicer on sat, we're planning to hit up the derby.
