Browns Bay Chum Derby

well officially the most frustrating day ever. hooked up 12, and landed 3. at one point we had a triple header and lost all three fish, 1 hopped off, 1 broke off attempting to get out of the mess of boats, and the other guy run over by some moron 20 feet from the boat(out in the open too). the 20-30 commmercials didnt help things either. plumper was insane with boats, but a ton of fish.

Yeah, what was with that? I thought the opening was on the 4th. There were a few cuttin in around the sports, but I couldn't really tell if they were rodding for fun or not. All those ones against the wall north of deepwater though???

One guy beside me screamed 'get the hell outta here you a**hole'....that was amusing.

Tough catch percentage there for you (although I'd of preferred more action) - you should take a look at the fall island fisher magazine and see their suggestions for bending the hooks for better hold of the fish - seems to have improved my catch rate significantly.

Sure was perfect weather out there though...hope this isn't the last of it.

You all didn't see me because I saw the armada pulling out of Browns at 8:30 and went straight up to Green Sea for the day..in amongst 30 commercial trollers out of the 57 that were fishing today...only about 5 sporties and it was more that civilized being among the trollers that had lots of swing room...
Fishing was a little slower with a double 3 minutes after dropping the gear and the only 3 more for the day and pulled up at 2:00 and back at browns at 2:20
Average size ones from 11 to 14 pounds today but ya gotta love the ones that launch themselves nearly into someones elses bow 200 feet behind my transom.
Seems with all the trollers that they were getting a little flasher shy...Still a great day on the water..no wind and sunny weather..
Back at it tomorrow..Paul:):)

Yes it has been combat fishing at plumper and dwb. But you haft to go were the fish are.Should be alittle slower with boats after the weekend is over. And yes the catch is slowing down.Do to I think of the trollers and gillnet opening going on right now. Heading out in acouple hours Ill let you guys no how it was. Tight lines and safe fishing SNOWWHITE

well john at sealand will be happy that we can buy his new stuff if he gets it in. im thinking we should hit up the stamp next weekend tho.

Sonds like too much fun whats the problem over there is there no courtious fisherman on that side????????

Well I did it!!! I went in with the gong show gang...for about two hours and that was enough for me..wnet north to Kannish..and Roy, most of the guys are really quite good, but it only takes a couple of pinheads to spoil it...
Starting to tapper of with the tides setting up later in the afternoon...should pick up in a week once the fishery recovers from the commercials..
Think I'll head back up to Green Sea tomorrow unless there's no-one at DWB...
Did manage to tag 6 today without losing any gear (even though I got run over twice)..
Great weather though but not much tide to spur the bite.

.....almost as bad as alberni canal >>>but not quite>>>>china creek takes the cake...

Hmm, back to that tidal thing - from what I saw, you do have a point EE, contrary to what Snowwhite mentioned, it was obvious Deepwater was the hot spot on the Saturday morning ebb and then Deepwater died on the change and Plumper got hot on the start of the flood. But honestly, isn't it the salmon that decide what tide they want to feed on and where!?!?!

Food for thought :)

As to etiquette it does puzzle me how oblivious some people are - ie. I am coming head on with someone, I commit early and start steering right, guilty party infront then proceeds to stay straight and even turn to his left (same direction) - forcing me to basically turn 90 degrees! It's insane how some people think out there. Only a couple times I got pissed, the main was when my big one was screaming and I told the guy off my stern to clear but he just merrily went along his way in the same path (which turned out to be crossing right behind causing me to freak about his downrigger)....grrrr He could have just turned starboard and I would have had a nice clear lane...no boats where in his way.

Ahh well, what can you do - I hit no boats and lost no gear to other downriggers...guess I can't complain much!

Sounds like fun sign me up NOT!!!!!!!!
I thought it was bad on the west coast but it sounds like we have it great over here guys here will turn there boats and definatly will bring up the riggers red monster did it for me in renny even before i knew who he was so we got both big springs in the boat which i thanked him very much for doing. sounds like too few of fish for too many boats in a confined area.
good luck wolf

And just when I thought I'd seen it all....
Today while fishing the flood at Plumper, I was pointing out an ocean going Alaska Lines tug pulling a container barge fully loaded with about 300 containers to clients, when what should a ditz in a 30 foot sailboat (that was coming across the straits) do..........thats right folks.. ran in between the tug and its tow....
If it weren't for a very alert tug skipper (he cut power and dropped his lines) you'd be hearing about the sailboat that was.
Container barge went sideways past Browns Bay Marina going with a flooding tide towards Seymore Narrows..
After he cleared the front of the barge he just cut power and drifted for about 30 minutes..My clients asked what he was doing..(I told them he was probably cleaning his shorts)
Coast Guard spotter plane did a fly by twenty minutes later and tagged the registration numbers and booked...
And my 84 year old dad has to get his operators license to fly fish from his 12 foot cartopper...

idiots! :) apparently those barges drag cables for some reason i fortget. Boats run into them and it pulls em down. That would be scary!

Sailboat in english harbour i believe going to the fireworks display.

I thought it was a cabin cruiser from Washington. It was at night (or dusk) and they didn't know (or didn't notice) the tug had it's towing lights on.

Since Puget Sound doesn't have all of the tug/barge/boom traffic we do in B.C., the boaters there seem to be less aware. There is also (apparently) a difference in the the right of way for ferries in Washington vs. BC. That may explain why that one family from Washington was run over near Horsehoe Bay by a ferry a couple years ago.

I also remember a solo sailor that did it at the Swiftsure race about 12 years ago...all they found was a couple seat cushions...
And it's also an important reminder (thanks for tweeking the brain cells kelly) that alot of the chip barges up here in C/R have a 300 meter cable trailing the last barge, as we had an incident two years ago when a Painters boat ran around the back of one and flipped him and his two guests into the water..a buddy who was the first on the tug rescued all three but just about ruined his right hand yanking the senior guest out ..almost got pulled in by the panic stricken grandfather as his hand hit the tugs prop trying brace himself.
But I digress...fishing is still ok at the flood and the commercial seiners can't go South of Deep Water Bay..Sure were taking a haul out in the morning yesterday...

Hey blue orca that was the incedent that i was thinking of. We were on a charter and a guide told us the story when a barge went by. Scary the people were ok but the boat was ain bad shape.

Kelly, I may be corrected on this but I believe the reason the chip barges have a tailing line is that it would add resistance to the tail end, and keeps the tow straight.
The only thing that could have been worse about Monday's incident was, if it had occured four hours earlier, the skipper of the tug wouldn't have seen or felt him as the fog was quite thick at 10:00 A.M... So thick that I escorted a boat from Separation to Plumper because he had neither a G.P.S. nor a radio...You only get one chance out there...be careful.
