The Barkley Roundtable met this afternoon (July 9)
The Area D fishery last week was poor. 15 average catch per boat, 38 boats.
Escapement remains steady, other stakeholders are catching fish at a slow but steady level. The total accounted of fish, between catch and escapement is approximately 200,000 adults, with a further 40,000 estimated to be in the canal and the inlet by the test boat. Given that there is 240,000 fish identified, and it is only early July , it is unlikely that the run is only 250,00 pieces, so they have upgraded the run a second time, this time to 280,000.
At this new run size, Area D has over 3000 allocation to catch.
Area D will open at 5pm on Monday, July 13th for 12 hours, until 5am Tuesday, from the Harbour clock tower down to Pocahontas Point. The fishery will close at 5am and fishermen should call in their logbooks immediately.
DFO will look at the catches, and decide if more fishing time is needed to get our allocation, and the the fishery could reopen as early as Tuesday at noon, if needed (or wanted). This would not be an extension, rather if it happens it will be a separate second opening and will need its own start trip and catch report. For this active management to work, we will need as close to 100% of logbooks called in immediately as possible. Thanks.
If we do get the second opening next week, the outer boundary will be moved inward to Bilton Point to help reduce encounters of Henderson Sockeye.
