Preventing braid backlash on a Scotty

I'm trying to come up with a way to keep my 2106's from occasionally reverse-wrapping the braid around the shaft below the spool. This happens ~1 in 20 times when touching bottom too quickly.

Anyone come up with a mod to their Scotty to fix this? I'm playing around with a sheet of 1/16" black rubber to see if I can create a guard that blocks the braid from getting below the spool. Was thinking I could either gorilla glue the rubber guard on or use a couple small stainless screws. See attached pics.

Anyone got a better idea?

Drop your cannon balls slower ?
Only time I ever have a problem is when someone hits the bottom at full speed.

Great idea! I fish the bottom a ton around 220’ with 18lbers and have had that happen to me twice

Yes, I'm pretty good at easing up just before hitting bottom to prevent this but it still occasionally happens inexplicably, and my newbie guests do it frequently. I also put my fingers below the braid after the cut-off switch to avoid issues. I'd rather just bulletproof my setup so this can never happen. I've talked to Scotty about this and they said some folks use a piece of plastic milk carton to block the bottom of the spool. I'd be interested in seeing pics of this if anyone does this successfully.

...or insert some plastic to prop the line up a bit higher in the line guide/switch so it spools higher up.

Is this a problem with the new Scotties?
I have the old style Scotties and have never had this happen.

Try adjusting the ferrel on your downrigger arm up a bit and the line should spool up better.
Is ferrell AKA the fairlead with a different spelling? :)

I was thinking adjust fairlead and maybe even add a second fairlead. That way the slack might form between fairleads instead of between fairlead and spool.

update to this thread now that the season is long gone. Seems like all the pictures in this thread have gone missing (board corruption?), hopefully you can use your imagination to picture the original solution I proposed (a rubber guard that blocks the braid from getting below the spool, secured with a couple stainless screws). The upshot is that this worked nicely; I didn't have a single reverse-wrap backlash all season. I can post a pic if anyone cares.
