Nootka Sound - Spring and Summer 2012

I'd bring your boat. There's lots of well protected water. You can fish San Carlos/Camel area without problem 90% of the time. There's always calm water some where in the Sound. This year you can fish North of Strange Island which is like being in a lake most days. Check regs though...

Yes to all above and you can rent boats in Nootka Sound

See: http://www.moutchabay.com/resort/boats-and-marina/ ..........a little on the high side at $350 + tax per day, but everything is included, insurance, tackle etc.
18ft welded center drive, new 90hp main & 9.9 kicker

Late July/early Aug the fish will be inside, you don't have to go out past the lighthouse

Money is the key figure, as how much you want to spend

Moutcha has camping as well, $60 @ night for full service sites, $50 @ night for non serviced & $40 @ night for tenting (don't quote me on that, that was last year)

Check their website out at: http://www.moutchabay.com

directmule, I stand corrected. Camped at Moutchabay many years ago, shortly after they put that wharf in, they sure have changed from that early start. Bill from oregon, as I had hoped many ideas from the forum members for you to ponder. ...........BB

Those are actually more towards the norm.
Go VERY EARLY (4:00 5:00 am) and back inside (around 11:00 - 12:00) BEFORE the winds and chop starts.

Yes we fished Bajo on Saturday and Sunday. We went with the goal of targeting Hali's and found a couple of hours to fish the reef for springs. Nothing of any size for us on the reef but we found springs farther out.

how did you do for Hali's...?

We are going to Nootka, camping at Mootcha Bay, on July 01 for three days. I have a 16ft open whaler type boat. Need a little advice here on the safe areas to fish at this time of year. Don't think I want to head out into the offshore sites, but I suppose if its flat?? Wouldn't mind getting a few crabs now that I have a trap. Any hints would be appreciated.

Judging from reports, the springs have't really showed up yet so fishing too far inside the sound probably isn't the best idea. You're going to want to head out to Lighthouse, Maquinna Point areas I think, which is the full run out from Moutcha Bay. This exposes you to swell and wind in the afternoon, but if you hit it first thing in the morning then you should be fine. I'll be there as of the 3rd doing it in a smaller boat. According to Moutcha's latest report, fishing still seems spotty. I think there's decent crabbing very close to the docks at Moutcha. Good luck.

Seagal. Thanks for the report.

I'm heading up on July 25th. Can't wait.

The crabbing is very difficult at Nootka. Set deep over 150 ft. reason being is the sea otter population is huge here and anything that is shallow is pretty much non exisitent. I have a good friend and he is setting his crab traps in 300 ft of water.

Fished Nootka and Esperenza on June 14, 15, 16th. Biggest hali was 35 lbs, 18 lb spring at Ferrier. Was some very good hali catches brought into dock. 50-70 lb fish. Springs were slow. Lots of good sized ling cod.
