Project left overs (23 Hourston)

absolutely raise the floor and install scuppers..
for all the good reasons, there are no bad ones.
I think I’ll leave the floor out until the bracket and the verados are on and see how it sits.. and go from there .. looking at other podded Hourstons it doesn’t seem like much more is needed.I always thought about welding up a frame to raise the wind shield tho ..
Funny how these projects always snow ball …
 
Well summer took priority over the Hourston but I did manage to glass the first layer on the stringers and fully glassed in the transom.
The mornings are cooler now so i will try to get something done each day..

Now to tie it all in with a couple layers of tabbing.
The transom will then get one full layer over top but I might put that on after I drill my holes for the pod . I would like to enlarge the holes and fill with filler to keep the wood dry then the top layer.
Hopefully I’ll get the main stringers in soon so I can grind the rest of the hull down. So far I have been doing it in small sections to keep it clean and retain as much of the original shape .

Well a miracle has happened and we managed to glass the main stringers most of the way.
Now I can finally grind the rest of the hull and get glassing the outer stringers and bulkheads.

I welded up some 2x2 angle to hold the stringers square and off the hull so bedding them in was really easy.

Hope we can put it on the trailer soon so it can be moved in and out of the heated shop.

Finally ground down to where I wanted it.
The keel had an enormous amount of CSM in it
Especially in the bow.
Looked like they twisted up a roll of it dipped it into resin and placed it in.. Took a long time and a lot of different tools to get it down.
I left some in that was solid and I’ll fair it with filler and then glue in foam where they had a 2x6 Fir.
I think they thought they were building an icebreaker!

Someone said Hourston had 2shifts running in the early days and this hull shows it
The layup is fairly decent and uniform but the tabbing and bulkhead work was horrible.. maybe it was Friday.
Here you can see the csm was over 3inches thick..
Filled a full can of old glass for the second time!

Had to post this..
We are always taught to seal up all the wood so it doesn’t rot but here is the original outboard stringer…
Not finished off or attached to the transom.
Those two stringers were the Only thing not rotten it the whole boat.
The resin marks on the side are from me testing different resins.
isophthalic polyester won.

Agreed!! Out of the 3 Hourston builds I have been involved in the quality control was nonexistent. Stringers only half glassed and one of the galley counter tops was made from a old pallet! No joke

That’s amazing
I read that they sold like 30 boats in the Vancouver boat show when the 23 came out..
Very hard to plan for that amount of work..
But a pallet???

I thought the same thing ..
This one had very light cloth holding down the main stringers yet the outside ones were 3/16 of roving.. no rhyme or reason..
 
also started thinking about a paint job.

2. Would you consider faux teak A pillars? I did it with my Hourston and some love it and some hate it but it’s true to the boat and distinguishes it from the rest.

Actually i was shopping for a more kid friendly boat and came a cross a nice fourwinns .
i liked the collour combo and quickly layed it over a hourston for sale on line.
the program is on regular windows but it is a trial version so i couldnt finnish it. i used to use corell draw or photoshop but i dont have any updated versions that work.
to answer the teak pillar question..I was gonna make them white as i have some teak and holly for the floors.
