WFN disallows 1,500 fishy Dauphin votes

You don't get ahead by cheating.

So says the World Fishing Network (WFN), which subtracted about 1,500 votes from Dauphin's bid to become Canada's Ultimate Fishing Town because of votes entered with false email addresses.

On Monday afternoon, Dauphin quickly flip-flopped from first to second in the standings and a post was made on the contest website's blog announcing the mass removal of fraudulent votes.

"For those of you keeping an eye on your votes or your competitions votes you may find that some towns have lost some votes which is not a mistake. (The World Fishing Network) is trying to keep the voting period as fair as possible and would like every town to have a fair and equal chance of winning. Please remember that you may vote with only one single email address per person and may only vote once every 12 hours with your email," the blog read.

Don Stokotelny of Intermountain Sport Fishing Enhancement, which runs one of Manitoba's best youth fishing programs in Manitoba and will receive the cash prize to put toward these programs should Dauphin win the title, was in contact with the WFN to find out why the votes were lost.

"Every week the WFN does a review on all the email addresses, checking whether they're legitimate or not. Apparently there were some people punching in whatever. Now they're doing more security to make sure they're all legitimate. We don't know who it was or where they were submitting the votes from, but we were told that shouldn't happen anymore," Stokotelny said.

Carla Wolfenden, the tourism and events co-ordinator for Dauphin Economic Development and Tourism, said the loss in votes was a disappointing setback for the town's campaign.

"It was frustrating, for sure. But I think the word is out that people need to smarten up. We've been shaking our fingers a little bit warning people to play fair," she said.

Dauphin, with 20,061 votes, sat second to Port Alberni, Sask.'s 20,194 votes as of Wednesday at 10:30 p.m.

But despite the loss of pride, Dauphin is still almost a shoo-in for the final round of voting.

Both cities are more than 14,000 votes ahead of third place Nipawin, Sask., in the West Region. The top two towns in each region make the final round of voting, along with four wild cards chosen by the WFN.

Wolfenden says the city is already looking forward to the finals.

"We don't want to seem too cocky, but we're getting ready to do some more campaigning. I'm excited. Even if we don't win, we've had a lot of fun doing it," she said.

Goes to show how naieve they are to Western Canada! Manitoba would love a Campbell river/Port Alberni rivalry happening as that would play into their hands of their region splitting the votes. Manitoba would keep wracking up the votes while Campbell river and Port Duke it out with splits. Come on guys. Its time to all get the word out to get behind Port Alberni. Look at all the work they did. 4 videos, and tons of pictures and submitions plus a Huge number of votes in the semi finals! They want this for the whole region around here and could use that money for the fish enhancemens and the promo. projects.http://www.wfn.tv/ultimate-fishing-town/Port-Alberni

Port Alberni is still in the lead in the semi finals. Port Alberni-42,050, Dauphin- 41,574...476 votes seperating the two. We need some help from B.C. Recruit your fishing buds and get them to vote every 12 hrs with a legitimate e-mail. Cant have Dauphin Manitoba being the Ultimate fishing town in Canada can we? This is getting serious here. Its an hr and a half drive to just get out fishing in Dauphin. Port Alberni you can launch and be fishing in 5 minutes or be on the stamp in under 10 depending on where your fishing. Bass fishing on Spider lake, and of course all the lakes around Port. How bout that sockeye run in Port Alberni! Yep vote vote vote. Manitoba? Pffftt! An insult to all of us. Especially when they think we are from Alta! LOL!

Should have been Terrace

Should have been, Could have been... Ain't. [}:)]

Not surprised the Flatheads got caught cheating. How otherwise could that particular locale garner so damn many votes? Appears they may still be at it as they are staying right there with Port.

The only</u> town that now stands a chance for bringing this one home to BC is Port. Vote, and vote often folks! Between us all, we can Git 'Er Done! [^]

Cheers,

Yup I voted again! About 40 mins to go and Port Alberni are at approx 56,500 to Dauphin approx 53,500. That means if every Dauphinite who fishes (they say one in eight fish and the town has 8,500 people)vote between now and the close off they still can't win ... HA HA!

From their blog :

TOP 10 TOWNS WILL BE REVEALED ON SEPT 7th!

The Top 2 towns from Ontario, West and Atlantic regions plus 4 "Wild Card" entries as determined by WFN will advance to the Final Round of Voting starting September 7th.

Check back soon!

Good job Port Alberni! Round one is over. Time for a break then back at er hardddd. Time to get er done ;)

Will be interesting to see who the wild cards are. If there was a deserving one out west to get in, Nipawin Sask should be it with the videos, pictures and submitions. I dont think Campbell river will make the cut. They barely had pictures and no video and i think only 3 writeups about them. Just because they woke up late and started voting doesnt give you a free pass to the derby...Unless the WFN wants some drama. Port Alberni has worked their arses off and deserves everyones vote across Canada including from Campbell river! Hope they pull it off.

Well just get ready to start voting again for Port Alberni on the 7th. The WFN hasnt put up the top 10 yet or the rules for the finals but start recruiting everyone to start voting again. Round 1 over, onto the finals. Lets bring this one home to B.C.

http://www.wfn.tv/ultimate-fishing-town/Port-Alberni Port Alberni needs your help to bring this to the island. We have made the top 10 in canada in this contest but need our island and B.C. friends to help bring it home to B.C. $25,000 for fishing enhancement programs plus 30 min promo on national tv. Our entire region will benefit from your support. Please help us out! Vote every 12 hrs with a legitimate email address till sept 28th. Lets bring it home!

OK-- How did Slough Shark City come up with 288 more votes at the last second on round 1?? Smells like dirty pool to me.
