Steering on 85 Yamaha stuck

I went out to fire up my main today, only to discover my steering was stuck. I searched here as I had observed a discussion a while back with the same issue but nothing came up. Can anyone suggest an easy fix, or is this a shop job. Not overly mechanically inclined. Thanks;) eman

start by disconnecting the steering at the motor.
if the motor will swing to side , it's more than likely your cable is seized.
I've replaced a few on my boat over the years.
you will need to remove the old cable and measure it.
Harbour chandler will have replacement kits in stock for $150-200
Rotary helms are a little less, rack and pinion on the high end.

I replaced mine. The cable was seized and I had to pull it out with much effort and lubricants :)
As Scott said, measure the current cable and get a new one, it's a pretty easy, if labour intensive, job.

Mine was the tilt tube, like others said remove steering cable to diagnose either tilt tube or cable.

Thanks all, I appreciate the info for sure. I'll let you know.;) eman
Well Thanks to Owen (F.A), I'm back on the water. My steering cable was stuck in the tilt tube I believe. And with much banging and good greasing, he has it working better then ever. It's so nice to know helpful classy people like him. Thanks for your help and suggestions. I've learned some lessons today. See you out there.;) eman
