Favorite mooching/downrigger rod for salmon?

Now you understand why you need a seal hunting Newfie along with you. We will be down your way Dec 6th through Dec 8 for Chelsea swimming maybe we can get out for a quick fish. Take care!!!

I have a lot of guests on my boat during a summer and many are a bit hard on the gear. I've switched most of my downrigger rods over to Okuma SST Graphite Casting Salmon/Steelhead Rods, SST 932MGXH or 902MH. These can be purchased for around $70, have lots of back bone and are pretty hard for a guy to break even if he high sticks it on a big fish near the boat. I can't justify spending $100's on a rod when I can catch just as many fish on my cheapo Okuma rods. The XH rod can handle the braid I run (65# mainline) with no problem and I even ran a couple of these for tuna this past year. Maybe I'm just cheap, but the SST's seem like good all around rods that do the job.
