Took my neighbor out who has never halibut fished before, and now I think he thinks this is too easy.

We left Esquilmalt at 7:30, dropped the traps off, headed to my halibut grounds, got set up and we were fishing around 8:05, just before the “tide” change at 8:15.

8:14 we have a fish on, since he’s never halibut fished I pulled out the phone and started recording (hence the 8:14) his first halibut and it was 109cm, within 10 minutes of fishing. Stuck around for a bit, but we packed it by 11:30. Checked the traps, and 1 keeper out of 5, on 2 traps .

Did a run to Constance on Saturday.
One legal ling right off the bat and then nothing all day.
We had what was likely a dogfish worrying our baits but never hooked up.

Couldn't stay at home. The sea wasn't bad but the rain got a bit much. Jigged the sheltered side of Discovery. Picked up a keeper ling pretty quickly, then concentrated on chinook. Seemed everytime my jig hit bottom there was a small ling. Lost count. Only a few quillbacks. No springs today. However I did boat and release my biggest rock ever. My truck looked so lonely at the Cattle point parking lot.

Black truck with canopy? The only one at the ramp?

We are in July right? And a weekend?

so…. I went and launched at 7:30 this am, I was the first and only trailer in the lot today at Esquilmalt.

I dropped a trap and made my way out to Beecher Bay to grab a few coho, on my way I was going to stop for a quick jig for halibut, but the tide was too far along for drifting and didn’t spend any time on the halibut rods.

Made my way to Beecher, and after I caught my fill, I made my way to the Breakwater-Macaulay to give it a whirl for some salmon. I stayed for about an hour and then packed it in. There was a couple other boats, Brotchie and Saxx, but very well spaced out. Marked lots of bait and a few fish but no takers on the water front.

only dropped 1 trap today, 2 red rock, and 1 small dung

It seems to me that the non-retention has landlocked a lot of fishers. This has been an excellent year for all species as far as I am concerned.
The coho were thick from Beecher to Pedder on Saturday but there were not many boats, and the boats I did see mostly came in from Sooke.

Curious. Are the Coho still out in deep water ~300' at 50-60' on the rigger? Or can you find them in tighter at the 100-150 Range? Planning a trip out on Sat with the young boys, likely Pedder to Race, pending weather conditions.
