Sooke 2014 Fishing Reports

Well...made it out to Otter Pt at first light. First boat out there I think...though someone went flying by headed west at about 6:40. Tried one pass east in tight and marked lots of fish. One good hit on the buzz bomb I was trailing in anticipation of doing some jigging but didn't stick.

Headed out deep sticking to the plan to find some coho out in 300+ ft. Nothing doing out there, blank sounder screen, no bites... so headed back into the eddy off the point...jigged around a bit in some big bait balls...watched an awesome whale show, pod of about 6 passed through including some fin slaps, some tail flips etc.

Finally headed back in around 11 and found this nice wild female coho off of 2nd rock who was hungry for anchovy, 35ft down in 85 feet of water. Lots of bait jumping all over the surface and a continuous 20 ft deep blanket of marks between 20-40ft down all the way from the point back to 3rd rock!

At least I've got a fish to test out the new birthday smoker...brining right now!

Yeah, maybe...though I'm starting to feel like figure out how to target Halibut from the yak is the next project! Gotta do some more research but maybe holding position in the deeper water off Trailer Park and jigging something pretty large just off the bottom might be the ticket? My old neighbour friend gave me some vintage jigs but they're only an o or maybe 2...assuming I need something heavier than that with the JDF current...
Oops,do not anchor yer yack.that would be unwise methinks

Three of us out at the tidelines from sooke harbour front 7:30 am to 11:30 9 fishing on, few long line release , few returned. 5 into the boat. approx 60 % wild. Not as productive as last sunday. One fish had a massive chunk of flesh missing above the tail, right to the spine and that fish fought just like any other fish. Spoons from 50 to 90 ft

One fish was stuffed, at the attached picture is the stomach contents of that fish. Looks like juvenile sockeye to me ?

If you can freeze those guys, or future juvi salmon from guts I will come and pick them up for you and report back with ID.

I suspect those are Pinks. Most Sockeye leave the Strait through the Northern Route and much earlier. Harrison Sea-type Sockeye leave the Strait in the Fall through the southern route. Regardless, this is cool info and would appreciate samples,

Tight lines

Fishing yesterday for coho just off of otter pt and must say one of the best days ive seen for them in a long time too many fish caught love when the kid looks up at his Dad and says my arms are tired!!!! Kid got a nice coho touching just about 11 lbs we had multiple double headers lots of action...Heard of a 17 lb hatchery coho caught by a fellow guide as well.
Sad part of the day was where are you guys???saw maybe 10 boast in total!!!!!After the SFAB worked so hard for us to get this chance to keep 1 wild as of sept 1 i thought for sure there would be WAY more people taking advantage of all of this

fishing is great nows the time to take a kid fishing , they are definitely here now!!! the coho killer thats green and yellow is working the Andrew P lemon lime and hoochies basically everything

see you out the Wolf

Out East Roy that's where most have been.. Not Otter? Tips a little shallower than last year it may have changed last week 70-80 feet... All the way to surface there everywhere.

Hi steve one of the guy i work with Daniel is looking to book a charter can I refer him to u

Fished 9-12 today out from Beechy hd, caught limit of 3 wild and 3 hatch coho. 2 were 10 lbs. large anchovy in glow green head outfished spoons today 80-100' and not as far out as the crowd. They also liked a large Trap Shack G-Force spoon. Any of the fish that had full stomachs were stuffed with 6-7 inch herring. Trusty green/white coho killer didn't get a hit today. Flurries of action between long lulls.

Well...Wolf ain't lied...if I can drum up a pair of Coho anyone can!

Out today at Otter at 11, into deep water after a pass in tight. A couple of hits right away that didn't stick. The first was a weird one for me...something took the hoochie strongly, gave a couple of shakes just so I knew a fish was there then just went totally dead weight in the water. Hook ripped out reeling it up so no idea what it might have been.

Then a pair 20 mins apart. Both on white hoochie 50 ft down in 300-320 ft of water.

Add to that a limit of crab, beautiful calm water and a warm fall day...Island life is good.

Out on the chuck today; noticed a couple of kayaks & a small gaggle of sail boats...buddy says look they're shadowing some swimmers; 4 guys were on the tail end of their swim from a bay outside of P.Angeles. Watched them close in on the Head;apparently it took 7 hours, some sort of dare.challenge-accepted.jpg

Oh almost forgot the Coho fishing is good; 50 - 80' spoons/bait...

Yeah wish I made it out. Boat was hooked up all ready and had to stayed home. Work prevailed... A couple of friends did well out there same depth as SS.

Out today in front Sooke. We managed four wild and two hatch in a few hours, returned about eight more. But the weirdest catch was this (in the pic) on the downrigger. Just looked over the edge and there it was on the cable. We think it is part of a whale or sea lion perhaps. Good chunk of skin and blubber.2014-09-19 11.45.27.jpg2014-09-19 11.45.35.jpg
