I dropped some crab traps last week in Pat Bay when I was doing some work on a mooring bouy. Lame returns. Only one keeper, but loads of juvenile dungies. It looked like a commercial crabber had lots of yellow floats in the area.
I headed over between Cherry Point & Saltspring for a bit to try for a coho while the trap soaked. There were coho and chum finning near the surface and jumping everywhere. Lots in the 5-8lb range, but there were some big ones around 10-15 size making huge splashes. I had a school of about 20 chum that I spotted near the surface and trolled towards. They didn't notice the boat until they were 3 ft from my hull, then there was a great boiling and splashing. Lots of fun watching the action, but I saw no bent rods amongst the 4 boats out that day. There were a dozen or two seals out there near the point, but I only saw one with a fish.
Now that the rain has come again, the fish have likely made the push upriver, but it was nice to see the volume of fish out there. Hopefully there are a few more chinook heading upriver now.
