Definitely a cabezon. Great fighting fish and in my opinion one of the best tasting fish on the west coast. Daily limit is eight and open year round anywhere except the RCAs.
Hard to tell from the pictures and I've caught a lot of cabezon and never seen a red one. It could well be a vermillion rockfish, Sebastes miniatus. If it is, it's one of the best eating rockfish around.

I got this last summer jigging for Lings. I let it go but have always heard Cabezon are good eating. A total toad with a fat belly! I know this is an old post but I'm bored..... Other than the OP's fish being red the rest of the features are the same even the pigmentation on the fins. Cool looking fish to be sure. I thought I had a much bigger Ling on when I brought it to the boat. Fun day on the water....
