Volvo Gear Oil

I run 80w 90 gear oil (non-synthetic) in my 29o stern drive leg. Anyone running something other (less expensive) than the Volvo gear oil?

just use any 80/90 marine gear oil that is compatible with your drive, DO NOT use automotive gear oil cause it has a different expansion rate and could blow seals

I use sierra semi synthetic looks like merc stuff and is very good

Okay, I'll of course use marine gear lube, but any brand is probably about as good as the next. Thanks!

Ahhhhhhh... that's very interesting. The manual does say to use engine oil, but what if water gets inside? I fixed a leak last year, and the gear lube I was using did indeed emulsify the water inside, something an engine oil won't do?

I think you will be just fine with either gear oil or engine oil.
Engine oil emulsifies with water just fine, you should have seen what I drained out of the chain cases of my skid steer.
