Panasonic! My daughter - a budding photography nut - is on her second compact (7meg/10x optical zoom) and it's the size of a pack a smokes.
Yeah Holmes, Canon makes good cameras' too, we just bought her a high end Rebel jobby and she loves it.

Hard to beat the Panasonic for the buck.

I went with the new Fuji Finepix Z33 WP before last season. It is a fantastic camera, small, light weight, under $200. It's is water proof, is submersable up to 3 mtrs. I used it many times this summer filming salmon beside the boat before entering the net, amazing footage. Also use it on the river getting cool footage of the coho we are catching. It is the best camera I have ever had for multi use and it seems to be holding up well.
