Looks like a basking shark... is that what it is? What's the story..did it wash up? Get snarled up in a boom cable?

pretty sure it was a six gill. it was 14 feet long though. found floating outside coulsons mill. 5 babies fell out and when it was cut open there was a count of 22.

looks like a Six Gill Shark. I was watching a show on National Geographic last week about them. They grow up to 18 feet long and can have up to 100 + pups at a time.

That's a hell of a shark! Any of the pups survive?

DFO came and had a look at it, and then it was reported that a local in Port saw it being dumped at the landfill later in the day. Seems kind of weird.... There are pics of DFO measuring it and stuff all over facebook....

That does sound weird,You would think DFO would buck it up and dump in in canal.Unless it had some toxic stuff going on.

They are usually a deep water shark. Alberni Inlet, Brentwood Bay and Hornby are some of the few known spots that they seem to be content in shallow water. They are often seen on night dives in those areas. Which could suggest they head to shallower water in the dark. Heard of a friend hooking one halibut fishing on Constance once.

if your talking of six gills, I agree/know they come up into shallow waters in the evening/night

they have come into and under the dock at Cougar Creek in Nootka Sound, there was a couple guys "fishing"(ILLEGAL) for them a few summers ago off there boat(tied to the dock)with all their flood/spot lights on,in the evening and hooked into one, which seemed to be 14-16ft, that when they tried to bring it up, it almost sunk the end dock. Just so happened that the fisheries had heard this was being done and was waiting for them and went down pulled his knife out and cut the guys line, the guys fishing had no idea it was the fisheries and boy was there a lot of cursing and yelling going on,have know idea if any fines were issued.

my son, about 13yrs old at the time, thought that was the coolest thing he had seen(the 6 gill)...

It actually went to the Research Center, not the dump. Some talk of having it stuffed and displayed somewhere in Alberni if the funds can be found to do so.

Interesting find for sure!

Cheers,
Nog

Juvenile males usually come up to the top 200' in the summer to feed on salmon. If you hook one be cautious !!! they have the same tooth structure as great whites and can "live" in a dormant stat without oxygen for several hours above water. I have 5 stiches to prove it!

Thats some badass stuff! Suprised more dont get hooked up by hali guys?

A couple years ago there was a group (of boats) fishing Jordan River area and they got 4 or 5 of them that day....One guy got 2

I hooked a white and was forced to cut the line. I would love to have stiches to show it or its teeth...Once in a life time up this way....Got to love it....

Was hali fishing out of Tasu. One guest was using his lucky jig, a gift from his buddy, and he hooked one bouncing bottom.
As he's reeling the french guy is saying eees elping meee over and over. I thought it was a slab coming up.
Had a good look at the teeth when we got his lucky lure back.
The one in Port is one ugly . Sure you want to stuff that one Nog?

Think it could be kinda cool if they did it in an underwater panorama type of setting...

Only ever seen a couple of these myself, and never hooked one. Have hooked Blues (unintentionally) and actually targeted on Salmon Sharks a few times. The latter look like a scaled down Great White, and deliver a fight that will leave your arms aching for a week! Very much a Reel Blast!! ;)

Cheers,

I hook about an 8 footer halibut fishing a couple of years ago - thought I had the hali of a lifetime - lots of head shaking to start with and some good runs. When I got it up to the boat I couldn't believe my eyes - didn't have a camera that day. Had to cut the line and donate my mudraker.
