SFI Update
September 2012
September 10, 2012
So the halibut closure has gone into effect and the summer fishing season is winding down and we would be remiss if we didn't offer some appreciation to DFO for keeping the fishery open (subject to a slot limit) until after Labour Day.
But despite this, we remain frustrated beyond words that the department is incapable of recognizing that the current halibut allocation model is the very root of the problem facing the fishery, and all the fixes, fiddles and work-arounds in the world won't change that. Simply put, we will face this same problem every year until such time that DFO agrees to adopt a new, fixed-number allocation model.
But please don't interpret our frustration as resignation. To the contrary. Your SFI directors and the many volunteers who participate in the various fisheries planning processes that help shape our annual fishing season will soon be getting back into the fray and working to ensure that next year's fishing season provides as many opportunities as possible.
And we want to talk to you about some of those plans. To that end, we are planning a few SFI Town Hall Meetings, November 13 in Victoria and November 15 in Port Hardy at this time and more dates and locations to be announced, where we hope that you will come out and provide us with more feedback on the fisheries issues that matter to you and help us become better advocates for the sport fishing industry. The dates are still in flux but we expect to hold meetings in Victoria and Port Hardy in mid-November, with other events on the mid-island, North Coast and Lower Mainland to follow.
Finally, we would be remiss if we did not remind you that the SFI`s annual Industry Policy Conference and Big Splash fundraiser will be held at the River Rock Resort and Casino on December 6th. We hope to see you there.
Until next time.
