Buy one of those infra red temperature sensors. They work great and are cheap at Can Tire. You can easily and quickly check engine temps..useful for many other things. It will even tell you the temp of the water. My buddy keeps a boat down in the Gorge so he checks the surface temp before diving in for a swim.
