There's another recycled roofing product around that imitates slate, I'm just wrapping a up a two year, four home build that used it for all roofs. Way lighter than slate, no special skills or tools needed, and - unlike real slate - you can walk on it and there's virtually zero impact damage. We returned the offcuts to the manufacturer for re-processing into more shingles.
