As the weather continues to heat up, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is hosting a public information session to show off the work they've been doing to ensure sustainable fishing in the province.

The society receives 100 per cent of the revenue from freshwater fishing licences and puts that money back into the sport, by stocking more than 800 lakes per year, funding research, conservation and education, and improving access to lakes by building infrastructure.

The society received an extra $3 million in revenue from licences in 2015, which were used to fund a variety of initiatives.

The society stocked 175 lakes in the Okanagan alone, and funded new fishing docks at Shannon Lake and Yellow Lake, southwest of Kaleden.

"We believe it's important for anglers to know what the revenue is supporting," said Andrew Wilson, president of Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.

In addition to stocking fish and building infrastructure, the society also funded 35 Learn to Fish programs in the Okanagan.

The society is holding their public information session on May 3, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Kelowna and District Fish & Game Club on Casorso Road.

Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP by emailing Marla.Zarelli@gofishbc.com.
