Halibut report.

Me and the Boyz Slimed my new boat with some hali on monday. Two hours on the SPOT and one nice hali around the 55 lb range and 2 around 15 that we let swim again. And then she Blew and we were outta there. Yup!!! was nice to have some fresh in the freezer again.

Hey guys,

Ok, so I've been in Victoria for 2 summers now, and I am still a terrible halibut fisherman. I have caught 2 halibut and have been hali fishing probly upwards to 20 times or so (mostly out at constance or 27 fath reef out of pedder bay - at least I think that is where I was fishing). I've got my anchor system and sort of know what I'm doing. I almost always use herring and octopus, I keep it on the bottom, I try to fish around 200', and I check it often, so the only thing I can think of is that wherever I am fishing, there are little or no hali's. Maddog, you and Wolf seem to dominate halibut pretty well. I am not asking for your SPOT, becasue if you posted that, it would probly become a battlefield (also, you just don't ask for a guy's best spot - if he feels your ready for it, he'll tell you, am I right?), but if either of you could give me a legitimate spot, just a halfass spot, maybe your old spot or something, that would be great. GPS coordinates would be ideal, but I'll totally understand if you don't want to post coordinates. And I'm good to go with anything as far as Jordan River.

I appreciate any advice.

Yes it was a bit nasty on monday wasnt it maddog tried to call you but i managed to get a limit for my clients toughed it out,and nobody puked LOL.

Howard you just need to find spots where you dont think people have fished look for contures on a chart and pinacles there are places out there on the bottom of the ocean that dont appear on a lot of the topo charts just pay attention to your sounder i have one that when i am cruising picks up the bottom, once you find it mark it you never know a new honey hole full of halis.

Good Luck Wolf

On the button Wolf, Only my two as well, but if your capable of deciphering a chart, look for anything out of the ordinary.. You would be suprised at how many rock pile hunters over look the minimal contour changes and find themselves a new honeyhole.. Try it out.-dirty

Thanks for the tips fellas. I'm going to do some major hole hunting next weekend. I'll you know how it works out.

Does anyone know if there is a ramp closer to Jordan River than the one in Sooke? Also, has anybody made it out there lately? I'm finally able to get out this weekend, and i'm trying to figure out if its a better bet than constance. any advice is appreciated.

Captain Dudds

If I'm not mistaken, this weekend is the Island Outfitters "Just for the Halibut Derby" so locally, everywhere will be pretty crowded.

Ayup!!! Affirmative. Sound the "GONG". Dudds, I think Sooke Harbour is the last stop before JR. Give West constance a go, You'll bump into one or four. Good Luck This weekend will be super busy. Be smart and creative and mark some spots on the drive by. LoL

Yeah maybe 2 years LOL but he is learning LOL LOL

Hey Wolf i'm leaving for the harrison cove derby in the a.m. and grandma is going to take my spot if you see him could you show him where it is. and good luck in the derby if you go.

There's One!!!!!!!!!

That's the Wild one, he's trying to stuff more money in his pocket this weekend. Rumour has it that Grappler is even there ??

Tournament Proven !

How was the derby??? Who won and what was the largest hali??? How was the weather, I ask that because the weather up here in Courtenay has been anything but boating weather. Wind wind and more wind Hope to get the boat out Wednesday been ready for 10 days now but the weather won't let me get out

Cheers ME

Happy Hookin!!!

A 174 from Oak Bay took first in the wind derby!!! I managed a 65lb and three other just under for 11th place and a berkley hali rod for a prize. Snotty does not even come close to the massive seas on Saterday, Sunday was a mill pond wich made up for it. Wolf had a nice slab on his boat. Double header 40s and the other two for me in an hour and a half total of four for our limit. Lost one of our partners due to sea sickness so we were down to a crew of two. Wolf what was the final tally???

Well, I made it out Sunday, and today. I managed to accumulate a grand total of one 12 lb hali (ya, i kept it). However, I'm going to continue to plug away until I find one of these so called hali holes. In the mean time, advice, especially regarding location, is more than appreciated.
