GPS to VHF......

So I have tried to get this working on my lowrance 250 radio w/ DSC and Elite 5. MMSI number done. Wiring seems right from what I gather, played around with settings on both radio and gps. Any suggestions?

maybe lets start with wiring, modle of elite 5 1st or 2nd gen dsi or not
what have you done in terms of color to color?
it should be as simple as 2 wires, 1-GPS tx to GPS rx and ground/shield
let me know what you've got and we'll get her figured.
I have done a few and may be able to help

just checked the diagrams and looks like it should be wired this way
yellow GPS+ in from radio to Yellow nmea out+ of elite5 (yellow to yellow) simple
green GPS- from radio to ground/shield of elite 5
let me know if that works you may have to set your Baud speeds to 4800 up as well on both units

I think it's 2nd gen Elite 5. No dsi.
Radio is Lowrance 250
Connected yellow from gps to yellow on radio, orange from gps to orange from radio (don't think this connection is neccessary but did it anyways) and black from gps to blue from radio. (don't think there is a shield connection from gps)

This is the connector I picked up from west marine for my gps.

GPS is set to Baud 4800. Can't find anything in radio manual about setting baud rate in radio. This is the radio I have:
http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/lowrance/lowrancemarine/lvr250.html

and here is the manual for it.

JUst thought about the fact that this radio was from the US. Checked the radio and it says US software. Will this affect it?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

Elite wires are as follows using tmp/spd port
Yellow=tx +gps out
Black= tx -gps out
Orange=receive (not used on elite 5)
configure com port to 4800 baud (should be factory default anyway but good to check)

LVR-250 wires are as follows
Yellow rx+ gps in
black rx- gps in
and I'm thinking you will have to ground the green from radio to display ground as as well as it is the nmea -rx
the orange is not used on elite 5 as far as I can tell
so in short
yellow to yellow
black to black
green to black as well

Once the wiring is correct, set up the radio communication port as follows:

1. Press MENU twice and select SYSTEM SETUP

2. Select COMMUNICATIONS PORT

3. Under com port 1, set the baud rate to 4800

4. Highlight NMEA 0183 OUTPUT and press ENT to select

5. Highlight NMEA 0183 INPUT and press ENT to select

The baud rate under communications port 1 should be set to 4800. Both the NMEA 0183 OUTPUT and NMEA 0183 INPUT should be selected. The GPS unit should now send and receive data to and from the radio. The radio will indicate latitude and longitude coordinates when it is receiving data.

The only connections needed are as follows
Elite yellow to LVR-250 yellow
Elite shield (black) to LVR-250 green

The Elite black wire should not be connected to the negative power (ground). The black wire is the communications ground, not the power ground, and is for connecting the shields of the communication cable, if a shield is used.

THANK YOU HOOKIN UP!!!!

This was the ticket:
yellow to yellow
black to black
green to black as well

My boat and family now have another safety measure for on the water. Hope to never use that little red button.

Cheers,
Dave

Glad it worked out for you,
nice to know its there if you need it,
just remember its not just a quick press of the little red button, you usually have to hold it for 5 seconds I believe.
and teach the kids that too, they could save your life.
