Gas prices

If you don't think converting the nat gas pipeline across the prairies is a good idea, surely the Canadian dollar at USD 0.78 should be changing your mind. We are still a net importer of oil in dollar terms because central and eastern Canada have to import oil at world prices in USD. Oil self-sufficiency should be a priority for us just like it has been for the Americans. I can understand the feverish obsession with Keystone XL and Northern Gateway because of the export dollars up for grabs, but that just benefits the oil companies. Ending dependence on imported oil benefits virtually all Canadians.

Alberta exporters are getting some offset from the low crude prices with the drop in the dollar because they're paid in USD but incur their expenses mostly in CAD. I suspect the much-publicised layoffs are more about getting rid of dead wood than an indication of economic stress.

Interesting website on where your dollar goes when you fill up at the pump.
