First time boat buyer advice

I have a 17ft sylvan explorer that might interest you. It's a 2007 with a 115hp merc optimax. Also a 6hp kicker and 55lb electric trolling motor. 2 live wells, 2 sonars 1 is a lcx25 sonar/gps. The 115 is low hours as I would drive to my spot and troll with the electric or kicker all day. In the front the whole deck can be made into a casting deck with or without a front chair. Great for casting off while using the sonar that's up front and the electric motor foot pedal. It also has a swing tongue trailer. I will let it go for 15k obo. Going from 16 to 17ft is a huge jump in size and even if your not buying mine I would highly recommend it.

Those Sylvan explorers look like nice boats :) I saw those legends pop up on Craigslist a few days ago. I don't have 18,000 kicking around in cash now that I've got to get a new vehicle. So one nice thing about buying brand new is cheap financing...

What do you guys think about this? Easily afford this in cash, but riveted boats scare me. http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pml/boa/4376953573.html
This looks like a similar deal, but doesn't include the top: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/bod/4381308247.html

What are the chances of this thing popping rivets first time in the water? Would you stay away from a riveted boat? Definitely cheaper.

Stay away from riveted hulls.. Eventually they WILL leak, and a loose rivet is a good place for corrosion to take root

I agree, rivets are fine for car toppers but you said you want this boat to last many years so look for a welded hull.

This was my thought as well. Although guy at work said his dad rebuilds and sells boats as a hobby and has a 14' lund with a low hour 30 horse merc for $3500.00. His thoughts on riveted boats is that they all leak a little, or sweat, but after a day of boating you might only have a litre in the bilge, and that I shouldn't worry about it. I was thinking this might be a good boat to start with, learn to the tricks/trades, and then next year buy a brand new one.

This seems a bit cheap for a jet boat: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/boa/4393527863.html
Sexy, but not my idea of low maintenance. I'd rather change an propeller than a pump :S.

Well I put down a deposit on the legend (refundable) and knocked a few more hundred off the purchase price.

Just saw one pop up for half the price. Not sure of the hours/condition, and Ill be gone all this week. ****.
