First car wanted

Buy a Toyota. Corolla or Yaris are good choices. Yaris are made in Japan. I have a 2008 Yaris with 200000 and it runs great. No reason not to buy from a dealer these days. More protection for the consumer and the do a safety inspection.
Their engines have a timing chain and not a belt. There’s a reason why most cabs are Toyota, that is before Uber…

Hope this advice is timely. It is about a 2004 Mazda 3 with the 2.3 liter engine. Don’t buy one. They are oil guzzlers once they accumulate some kilometers.
Our 18 year old granddaughter moved in with us in December 2020 as she got a winter job teaching skiing at Sun Peaks. We live a 15 minute drive away. Her dad bought her the above car. Great body, clean history, no rust, solid, economical, lots of pep, and rode really nicely despite 230,000 km. Super deal. But it burned oil. Big time. We put in 1 to 1 1/2 liters every 500km. Ultimately the catalytic converter would plug leading to a very expensive replacement. The web is full of complaints by owners experiencing this.
The most attractive option is replacing the engine with the 2.5 litre version, but unless you can do that job yourself, it will cost way more than the car is worth.
That 2.3 litre engine went into about 6 years of early Mazda 3 builds. Those years cover what your budget might purchase.
Good luck in finding the car you want, just don’t make it an early version Mazda 3 with the 2.3 engine.
