Guess they'll be in to spawn shortly.......

What's the word this year......? Lots of them out there? Numbers?

ECVI Herring 2014

I have seen no signs driving between PV and QB, not even bird activity. Usually by this time of year there is something, maybe just late?

Apparently about two weeks ago there was a small spawn off Nanoose bay but it was a few miles out in no mans land. I saw pics.

looking forward to trying this fishery for the first time. Hopefully this year is as bumper a crop as last year.
The drastic increases of herring and other sealife in the Straight of Georgia make me smile. Hopefully it continues and the commy fleet doesn't decimate the returning stocks! Go herring!

the food herring fishery last month reported huge biomass and very big fish this year.
the test boats are reporting same thing last few days , to the point where many guys are gearing up with extra large web nets .
the roe % is still low but that changes very fast ,
all things are looking like a huge bumper spawn year.
however reports also say there is massive increase of sea lions.

That makes it pretty easy. You can also add vessels to "my fleet" to watch where the various groups are working. Isnt tech wonderful.

There is a DFO update today. I don't know how it compares to other years or what's to be expected but I'd be interested in the response of others....

Really it is all a political joke. One would think that if any rational herring fisheries manager that is looking out for the good of the herring that was looking at these numbers....would not call a harvest....

Same day last year....estimated herring in the Georgia Strait: 115,000 tons. This year 75,000

I will be calling the herring fisheries manager tomorrow to ask about this.

Last year.....

The roe herring seine fishery reopened at 0630 hrs March 04, 2014 in upper
Baynes sound on approx. 2,000 tons near Gartley Point in Upper Baynes Sound.
The waters of Comox Harbour in Subarea 14-14 are closed to fishing, and these
waters are described as the waters westerly of a line from the point as Goose
Spit south to Gartley Point. The approximate hailed catch is 2,400 tons this
morning. Pool captains will be given permission to set vessels if the pool has
quota left and if sets are not being released. The gillnet fishery is not yet
open in the Strait of Georgia however the gillnet advisors are assessing the
opportunities in the area.

There is a spawn flight underway, the flight so far has observed 2.8 na miles
from Cape Lazo up towards Kye Bay and spot spawns at Willimar Bluff. The plane
has flown the Vancouver Island shore and is in that air now, with no other
spawn reported. There is another flight planned for tomorrow at 0900 hours.
