Courtenay/Campbell River Fishing Report

Been busy but better late then never! Went out last Sunday was pretty snotty but decided to go out anyways. Fished the Kitty Coleman / Bates Beach Area 200ft right on bottom managed to hook into a 10+ pound winter only to loose it after a agressive fight with a seal over whose fish it really was. Well at least I got all my gear back. We also reeled in a small ling cod which had been bitten in half would have liked to have seen the fish that did that if in deed it was a fish and not a seal. I caught the salmon on a glow white, orange and black tiger prawn hootchie 36" leader behind a purple haze flasher. Reports have been coming in from quite a few fishermen that this area is producing alot of decent fish in 120' to 200' of water fishing right on bottom. I didn't prawn but I here that prawning is good so get out before the commercial boys start up soon!!! Another good spot I here is producing feeder chinooks is sentry shoals.

Cheers ME

Hi MyEscape ,see you have found time to go out and have a little fun! I too went out last Wednesday Apr. 5 my birthday . Went out with a bud to see if we could get some little critters and a bit of action for winter spring. Well we only got 53 prawns , and I found 2 of my brand new traps that I lost 5 weeks ago, go figure. When I lost my traps I was trying a hole in about 300', I proceeded to put my two traps on one line. What happened is that I put my weight clip on the line , the weight took the rope down and spuned the rope with the current , that made my rope ball around the weight. At that time I did not know what had happened. All I could do is watch my buoy disappeared under , sick feeling!..... Thanks to strong currents and lots of luck and losts of honest fihsher men I got them back . After retreiving my lost traps, and a few laughs, we then tryed to hook our selfs a winter spring. Well 15 minutes in at 115', green flasher with a 79 hoochie (green) bang, 15 pounder in the boat , Happy Birth Day SEARAM . I will never again complain about people stealing my traps or my prawns , life is good.

Wow sounds like you had a fantastic day. Happy belated bithday!!! It's only natural to assume the worst when you can't find your traps. Talk about luck on your side, great to hear you found them and got them back. Just when you thought the day couldn't get any better you land a spring on top of all the other possitives of the day. Did you buy a lottery ticket when you got off the water???? Just kidding.
Thats a nice size winter you caught congrats. Heh SEARAM where do you fish out of, please excuse my bad memory. Hope to get out Sunday and next Wednesday weather permitting. Here fishy fishy fishy

I do the Fishing, God does the Catching!

Well here's fishing trip out to Kitty Coleman take two! This time the website won't be down so hopefully we get a better turnout. I'm planning for a Sunday morning outing this weekend, anybody else interested? Let me know and well try to arrange a meet at the launch and head out together!

Hey Cowboy: I am looking at hitting that 7.00am high tide. Not the best time for a get together. The tide will certainly be dropping in a hurry after that. Do you have any meeting times in mind? eman

I was thinking of that early 7:00am tide as well maybe launching at 6:00am and then burning over there to get that tide change. I will probably have to launch at Comox Marina however unless I head in real early as that low tide getting back into Pacific Playgrounds is a no go for my boat and the other ramps like bates are to unprotected. So I'll be out there bright and early I hope, weather permitting. I'll be in the Grady called "Knuckele Buster" What launch are you guys using? Pacific needs to be dredged again, if Kev's boat couldn't make it I got no chance on anything under 7-8 foot tide.

Went out Friday just before noon, 1 keeper about 9 pounds back side of Harwood near Vivian. 1 other boat with 1 about same size. Cop car and purple haze flasher at 120. Maybe back Sunday

All you ECVI Georgia Strait guru's

Whats the Latest on the fishery off Flora Isl, Norris rocks,Tribune and whaling Station Bay? Are the Springs making a comeback at all in these area's in the Summer months? Barry Thornton was the master at fishing Tube fly's for nice Springs off the kelp at Tribune.

I miss the days off jigging big springs all day long off Chrome Island and within a rod length of Eagle Rock etc.

Maddog the fishing is still fairly decent but lots of seals! The whaling station seems to be the most consistent. Last year a few of the local river mouths ;) also produced some very nice catches including a few nice tyee's late August right through most of Sept.
By the time things heat up in Tribune and Flora I am already fishing the West Coast. They almost closed that whole area for a rock fish habitat but thanks to lots of letters and sportsfishermens support we were able to get DFO to change their minds about that idea.[:0]I know the coho numbers aren't there like they use to be by any means. Inside lambert channel can still be fairly good at times. The winter/feeder spring fishing has been quite good around Courtenay so no need to try other areas yet.:D

I couldn't go out today [V] but took a drive down to the water @ 7am sunny and next to no wind. [:0] Hope the guys that went out today have a great day on the water and catch lots of fish. Will be headed out again Wednesday.

Cheers ME

Man am I pissed! Sorry for not making it out there boys i sure wished i could have but my two buddies I was supposed to go with bailed at 11:00pm last night and with no time to find a fill in I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and expense to go by myself! Oh well I guess! But I hope all of you guys got out and did well!!?? HOw was it? reports please, don't torture me to bad though!

Hey Cowboy: I feel your pain. I could not go this morning as well. It looked a little bumpy out there from my vantage point here in Union Bay. I sence that the fishing is good out there, but it's always a problem in these parts as to where you can launch and land, paticularly with the tides as the are at this time. I think we should have a Kitty Coleman Salmon Derby. There are obviously enough interested fisher people to make it interesting. We could also camp at Kitty Coleman. That would be nice! eman

Eman, I agree fully about the ramp situation around here it's pathetic that there isn't more good protected areas to launch especially in the Kitty Coleman area, I still think the best bet would be a laucnh in the little river ferry bay. It's protected, deep and sandy and has lot's of room for a good launch and parking. I would definetly be into a derby around here either kitty coleman or Flora island etc.. We should loook into it a little more! What does everyone think?

SWC

Hey CS i agree with you. They are all ready starting to take are fish up here in Campbellriver area again. Its only going to get worse as the season goes by. DFO knows of this problem but they are to chicken to due anything about it.Just like they let them build a cruiseship dock in a major area for are resting fish waiting to go up river. And disrupt the flow of the tide for the tyee rowers? As afriend of mine stated We as the sportfishing secture of BCneed somehow all get together as one big voice. Mybe we will be listend to.Jusy my two cents worth.

The seals everywhere around here are getting to be a menace to fish and having a good feed at the end of the day. To bad they didnt follow commercial prawners, and push them out.

Falkor

I agree with you CS.. Last year at kitty EVERY trip involved a battle with a seal. This year I went out once..4 on, one fish fed a seal, one undersized, and 2 keepers.. But it ruins the fun fighting a seal for your fish..I would like to buy you a box of ammo for the black bastards.

So what a bout a derby around here anyways? I think it would be fun even if we only had 10 boats! There are lot's of places to hold it! We could even wait till late August and hold it down at the Big Qualicum for those big tyees and that way alot more south island boats would come! Thoughts??

SWC

PS Hopefully weather permitting heading out to Kitty tomorrow good tide change! Here's hoping!
